LEAVITT, Bruce James
November 13, 1949 – April 6, 2017
Bruce Leavitt, beloved husband of Sue Stephan Leavitt, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2017 in Red Deer, Alberta at the age of 67 after battling kidney cancer. Besides his wife he will be sadly missed by his siblings Garth (Carol) of Morin, Pam (Murray) Stovel of Calgary, Steve (Pat) of Raymond, Carma (Duane) Thomson of Magrath, the Stephan family and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Wallace and Helen (Harker) Leavitt, his sister Lavonne Gehmlich, brother-in-law Grant Gehmlich and sisters-in-law Carol Leavitt and Bev Leavitt.
Bruce grew up on a farm near Glenwood, Alberta. He was a good help to his father but mostly loved playing with his family and friends on the farm. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his love of a good joke. While taking vocational training in Calgary he met Sue Stephan and they were married in 1973. They lived in Calgary, Sylvan Lake and finally Red Deer where they have been for 38 years. Bruce really enjoyed his last job at the Red Deer College before retirement. Bruce was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his favorite calling was an usher in the Red Deer, 1st Ward where he served for many years until his last illness. Bruce will be missed.
Bruce’s family wishes to thank his friends and members of the 1st Ward who have helped to support him over the years and to the Stephan family for including him as a member of their family. We are also very grateful to the wonderful staff who worked at Wells Street and 14 Greenway Street group homes for the excellent care given and compassion shown him over many, many years.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 12 at 1:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3002-47 Avenue, Red Deer. Friends may visit with the family Wednesday April 12 prior to the service from 12:00 noon to 12:45 pm.
Family and friends are invited to a graveside service to be held Thursday, April 13 at 12:00 noon in the Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Alberta and a lunch at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Glenwood at 12:45 pm.
