Charles JOHNSTON

JOHNSTON Charles Brine Johnston passed away Sunday, July 15th, 2007 at the Innisfail Hospital at the age of 90 years. Born at Innisfail, December 22nd 1916, he was the youngest son of Bowden pioneer parents Anne Harding Howard and Charles Almer Johnston. He spent his life farming what is now the Parkland Refinery north of Bowden and after the sale of the land in 1960, moved to the Grahamston District and continued farming. Marrying Grace McLeod in 1941 they raised 6 children while running a mixed farm operation.  In 1990 they retired from farming and moved to Innisfail. He enjoyed attending auction, farm, and antique sales purchasing numerous antique items including horse harness, buggies, household items, etc.  He loved the land and continued to garden following retirement.   Dad's last years were lived at Autumn Glen Lodge and he appreciated the care & kindness extended to him by the staff. Brine was a long time member of the Bowden Pioneer Museum and the Bowden Cemetery Board and was the recipient in October, 1997 of a Life Commitment Award from the Alberta Museum Association in "Honor of Significant Contribution to the Preservation of Alberta's Material Heritage". Predeceased by his loving wife Grace in 1999,  grandson Norman Ehrman and son-in-law Edward Ehrman as well as 3 sisters and 3 brothers he leaves to mourn his children Barb (John) Thomson, Innisfail; Carol Ehrman, Standard; Jim (June), Red Deer; Doug (Marie), Calgary; Diane (Jeff) Luxen, Olds; and Ron, Calgary; 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 20th, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. from the Innisfail Baptist Church, 5204 Woodland Road, Innisfail with Pastor Mark Houghton officiating.  An interment will be at the Bowden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Bowden Pioneer Museum.
