Elizabeth ABREY

ABREY Elizabeth H. Abrey of Red Deer passed away at 4006 – 51A Street on September 7, 2007 at the age of 86 years. As a young woman Bette worked at Riding Mountain National Park then moved to Winnipeg. She worked in a variety of industries, sewing factory being one of them. Bette met Bert in Winnipeg just after WWII. He told her right off from the start that they would marry. They were engaged on Valentines Day and were married in June of 1946. They lived in Dauphin, Brandon and Flin Flon before settling in Red Deer where their first daughter, Gaye, started school. Bette got a job at the P.T.S. (now the Michener Center) where she worked her way up the clerical ladder to hold a supervising position in accounting. She was an employee for Thirty years and her accomplishments were many; she was a proficient typist, did early computer data entry, an active union supporter and steward, she helped in achieving, equal pay for women, day care centre on site, maternity leave and other benefits that people enjoy now. Bette had another daughter, Devon, when Gaye was eleven and Bert built her a new house. Community wise, Bette belonged to the Royal Purple, Legion, helped with the Christmas Bureau and hung out with friends at The Mess. She enjoyed camping, bowling, fishing, their cabin at Crimson Lake, friends, banjo music by her hubby and many cavalcades. She exposed her daughters to dance and music. She encouraged independence and self-sufficiency in all family members. Bette will lovingly be remembered by her husband, Bert, two daughters, Gaye of Red Deer, Devon (Randy) of Calgary. Her two grandsons; Andrew and Michael of Red Deer, her great grandson, Jessy. She will forever be missed by her two brothers, Henry of Winnipeg and Fred Basaraba of Prince George, and her sister, Olive Wiley of Winnipeg. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Bette was predeceased by many brothers and sisters. A Funeral Service in celebration of Bette Abrey’s life will be held Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at Red Deer Funeral Home (6150 – 67 street).
