Emil HILMAN

November 5, 2005

HILMAN, Emil (1922 – 2005) The earthly phase of Emil Leonard Hilman, a long-time resident, businessman and family man of the Sylvan Lake area, ended suddenly on Monday, October 31, 2005, at the age of 83, due to a fatal heart attack while in Creston, Iowa. Emil was born in the family farmhouse in the Marianne District in August of 1922, the twelfth child in a family of fourteen. In 1944, he married Martha (daughter of Reinhold and Ida Frisch) and began building a home on a farm he had purchased in the Centerville Area, a few miles north of where he was raised. The foundation of their home was poured in May of 1945 while the radio was broadcasting the end of World War II. Much of the home was built from lumber that Emil had milled from trees cleared from his land. Always a hard-working man, Emil, in partnership with his brother, Phil, expanded the saw-mill operation into a business, in conjunction with a land-clearing operation. He also had a general trucking service for many years along with a growing farming operation, and eventually a busy welding and repair shop. Emil and Martha raised a family that grew to nine children. As the children matured they took over the farming operation, which allowed Emil to concentrate on the repair shop. Hilmans Welding and Repair grew to meet the needs of many farmers in the area as word-of-mouth spread about his mechanical expertise. He semi-retired in 1985 and fully retired in 1999. Emil is survived by his second wife Virginia, brothers Ray and Art, and sister Helen. He also is survived by his nine children: sons David (Joyce), Marvin (Ruth Anne), Stanley (Deborah), Perry (Mary), Earl, Calvin (Linda), James (Julie) and Vern (Barb), and his only daughter Linda (Peter) Levijoki, stepsons, Jim (Jackie) and Steve (Lee) Luther. In addition, he leaves 19 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and eleven step-great grandchildren, all of whom he loved very much. Emil was predeceased by his parents, Oscar and Ida, brothers, Richard, Phil, William and Harry, sisters Sadie, Aileen, Hazel, Selma, Edna and Jean, stepdaughter, Cathy Stickels and (in 1998), wife, Martha. All are welcome to come and pay their respects at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820 – 45 Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday evening between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. A Public Funeral Service will be held at the Living Stones Church, 2020 – 40th Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Monday, November 7, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Alto-Reste Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta.
