Helene GILLUND

July 31, 2007

GILLUND, Helene Helene Gillund was born March 20, 1913 in Coleman, Alberta. She died, surrounded by love, on July 28, 2007 at the age of 94. Helene grew up near Leslieville. On May 9, 1935 she married Norman Gillund. They lived a few years in Sylvan Lake and in 1939 moved to farm the Gillund homestead near the north end of Gull Lake. In 1972 Norman and Helene retired to Ponoka. A hardworking and caring woman, Helene loved plants, both indoors and out, cooking and the company of family and friends. She never passed up an opportunity to pick berries or dance an old time waltz. She lived very independently in her own home until suffering a stroke a week prior to her passing. It is difficult to say if she was happiest stirring up her famous rhubarb cake, being the first in the kitchen to tackle the dishes, or reminding her grandchildren not to take any wooden nickels. Helene is survived by her daughter-in-law Pierrette of Calgary and her children Brad (Joanne), Kevin (Dawn), Martin (Mihaela) & Janna (Glenn); by her son Grant (Betty Anne) of Smoky Lake and their children Shannon, Eric & Garth (Debbie); and by her daughter Denese (Robert) Stretch of Innisfail and their children Blane (Jodi), Julia, Trena & Quin; her great- grandchildren: Heather, Lauren, Melanie, Jordan, Emily, Grace, Jenna, Jamie, Gaby, Travis and Jaida; her brothers Teofil (Bernice) Wolney and Marcel (Eunice) Wolney; brother-in-law Bill Grisbrook and sister-in-law Fern Wolney. She was predeceased by her husband Norman in 1995, her son Garrie in 1997, by her brothers John, Rudy, Gus and Emil; and her sisters Mary and Nellie. A celebration of the precious life of Helen Gillund will be held at the Ponoka United Church (5020-52 Avenue) at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2007. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to S.T.A.R.S. or the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre.
