John AITKEN

AITKEN John Henry (Harry) Aitken passed away in Linden, Alberta on January 17, 2007 at 93 years of age. Harry was born February 21, 1913 at Darmody, Saskatchewan, the oldest son of John and Sadie Aitken. He attended school in Gallinger and Eyebrow, Saskatchewan. In 1933, Harry and a friend, John Cornish, came to Three Hills to work on the harvest. For the next few years, Harry worked at various jobs in Leslieville and Three Hills. In 1937, Harry married May Baker. A daughter, Doreen, was born in Three Hills in 1938. He relocated to Red Deer in 1940. In 1943, he enlisted in the Army and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Holland and Germany. After his discharge in 1946, Harry returned to Red Deer. He and May divorced at this time. Harry began his employment with Bettenson's Sand and Gravel in Red Deer where he worked until he bought his farm near Bowden in 1960. He operated the farm until 1981 when he sold the farm and retired. About this time, Harry met Lillian Barkley and they were married on June 28, 1982. Lillian brought four children and five grandchildren to this union. They settled in Olds where they enjoyed their retirement. In these years, Harry was able to pursue his life long hobbies of fishing, camping, and woodworking. Failing health and Alzheimer's disease necessitated his move to the Linden Nursing Home in 2004. Harry was predeceased by his mother Sadie, his father John and his step-mother Cora, his brothers Bruce, Clark, Jim, his sister Margaret, his brothers-in-law Murdock Martin and Elmer Grasdal and a grandson, Robert Duncan. Harry is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Lillian, his daughter Doreen (Jim) Duncan, of Eckville, Lillian's children Linda (Mike) Rieberger of Bowden, Valerie Barkley of Olds, Ken (Mary) Barkley of Leduc and Bruce (Louise) Barkley of Princeton, B. C., his brother Donald (Doreen) of Eyebrow, Saskatchewan, his sister Janet Grasdal of Regina and his sisters-in-law Lorna and Helen of Eyebrow, Sask. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grand children and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Linden Nursing Home for the excellent care during Harry's residency. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 22, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 105, Olds with Pastor Brent Reilly officiating. Interment to follow in the Olds Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Linden Nursing Home, Box 220, Linden, AB, T0M 1J0, or Alzheimer Society of Alberta #134, 1935-32 Avenue NE Calgary, AB T2E 7C8.
