September 27, 2008

SALAMANDICK Lena Elizabeth (Dick) Salamandick, passed away at the Lacombe Hospital & Care Centre (Continuing Care) on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at the admirable age of 97 years. Lena was born at Christian, Ruzendolf, Crimea on June 5, 1911. As an infant, she immigrated to Canada with her parents Jakob and Helen Dick and four older siblings. The Dick family made their home near Mendham, Saskatchewan, and Lena would be the fifth of nine children. In 1936, Lena moved to Lacombe, Alberta to help her brother Joe in his Boarding House. It was there, that she met and married Joseph Salamandick in 1938. Together, they raised a family of five children, however, Lena's love of children led her to care for many others as well over the years. Lena loved life and the beauty of the outdoors. Her vegetable and flower gardens easily flourished under her care. She also had the knack of turning the simplest ingredients into a feast for many. As a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church and the Catholic Women's League (CWL) for over 50 years, she convened CWL Turkey Suppers and catered numerous weddings and area events such as the annual Lacombe Bull Sale. For two summers, Lena was the head chef at Our Lady of Victory Camp. She would work long into the night to make sure the campers woke each morning to the fragrance of bread and buns fresh from the oven and homemade pies for dinner. In her retirement, Lena joined the Lacombe Seniors Bowling League and enjoyed travelling to numerous locations with family and friends whenever possible. Lena is predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 1986, her youngest son, Kenneth, in 1996, and her oldest son, Harold, in 2006. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Jan Salamandick of Red Deer, her son Lawrence (Judy) Salamandick of Edmonton, and her daughters Joanne Brackenbury, of Lacombe, and Doreen (Craig) Flewelling of Bowden. Lena has nine grandchildren; Lisa, Stephen, Michael, Cathy, Mark, Curtis, Kristy, Karen and Sheldon and four great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her sister-in-law Katherine Dick of Red Deer, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Funeral mass and a celebration of Lena's life will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 5128-53 Street, Lacombe AB.
