MORAN Rev. William Lawrence of the Basilian Fathers passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Fr. Lacombe Nursing Home in Calgary, AB, at the age of 86 years. Father Moran was born in Trochu, AB, and grew up on his parents’ homestead farm. After graduating from St. Mary’s Boys’ High School in Calgary, he entered St. Basil’s Seminary in Toronto, Ont., and was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in Calgary in 1946. He taught Science at St. Mary’s High School in Calgary for 30 years, and also coached the football team to city championships. After his tenure of teaching, he ministered in Mexico and Colombia for the following 23 years where he was dedicated to the poor. He was known as Padre Lorenzo. His language of choice then became Spanish and he often hosted groups from Calgary in Mexico. He stressed: "You are not coming to feel sorry for the poor but to appreciate how happy they are with so little." Fr. Moran was predeceased by his parents, William and Clara Moran; his sister Mary and her husband Alan McComb; his brother John and wife June; his sister-in-law Irene Moran (Victor) and his brother-in-law Micky Maguire. Fr. Lawrence leaves to mourn his family of Basilian Fathers, two brothers and one sister: Victor Moran, Eugene Moran (Loretta) and Irene Maguire, many nieces and nephews and many good friends in Mexico and Calgary. Prayer Service on Thursday, January 4 at 7:30 pm at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 15 Templebow Road N.E., Calgary. Funeral Mass on Friday, January 5 at 11:00 am at St. Thomas More Church with the Very Rev. Kenneth J. Decker CSB, presiding. Memorial Service on Saturday, January 6 at 11:00 am at St. Anne of the Prairies Catholic Church in Trochu, AB, with burial following at St. Anne’s Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, if desired, to The Basilian Fathers Missions, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto, Ont., M5S 3C2 in memory of Fr. Moran.
