Murray MARTIN

December 21, 2007

MARTIN Murray Samuel Martin of Lacombe died December 18, 2007 in Red Deer at the age of 60. Murray was born May 11, 1947 in Brooks, Alberta to Samuel and Beulah Martin and spent his childhood in Duchess, Alberta. He then moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 1968. He attended the Goshen Biblical Mennonite Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana for a year and then returned to Alberta to work as a social worker in Drumheller. Throughout these years he would go home to work in the family John Deere business in Brooks. He then decided to pursue his interest in medicine. In 1978 he obtained his M.D. from the University of Calgary and completed his Family Medicine residency (CCFP) and his Family Medicine Anesthesia certification in 1980. He worked locums in rural Alberta, including Spirit River, before coming to Lacombe in 1982. It was there that he met a public health nurse, Joan Ing, and they were married in 1983. They subsequently had two children, Tara in 1985 and Christine in 1988. He invested time and energy to meet the needs of his patients in the growing community of Lacombe. He was a skilled diagnostician and truly cared about his patients. Murray made time to enjoy activities and vacations with his family. He was a committed father who followed his children's activities and their academic pursuits with deep interest and concern. Murray also took pleasure in his outdoor physical activities such as running, cycling and golfing. He was adamant about learning and was constantly striving to obtain more knowledge about medicine. He was well-read and always had a newspaper or book on hand. He will also be remembered for his dry humour, quick wit, and personal sayings that kept many entertained. He was making plans for more opportunities to pursue his personal interests with his wife. Murray will be deeply missed by his wife, Joan Ing, and their children, Tara and Christine Martin. He is lovingly remembered by his parents, Sam and Beulah Martin of Brooks; his brothers Gerry (Wendy) Martin of Rosemary, Rodney (Evelyn) Martin of Lethbridge, Richard (Lecia) Martin of Duchess, and his sister Fern (Alvin) Nickel of Rosemary. He is also fondly remembered by his parents-in-laws Joyce and Bruce Ing of Carstairs, and Joan's sister Kathy (Mark) Sosnowski of Calgary, and brothers Rob (Deanna) Ing of Airdre, and John (Carrie) Ing of Carstairs. Murray leaves behind many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He will also be missed by Dan (Marilyn) Roth of Red Deer, one of his many special cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Glenda Martin. Funeral Services will be held from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, College Heights, Lacombe on Saturday, December 22, 2007 at 3:00 PM. Cremation entrusted to Wilson's Funeral Chapel & Crematorium.
