SCHAFER Mr. Valentine Peter ‘Val Schafer of Red Deer, passed away peacefully at the Valley Park Manor Nursing Home, Red Deer on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at the age of 88 years. Val was born at home on March 5, 1917 and raised on the family farm near Salvador, Saskatchewan. Val was the only child of Peter and Margaret and was fortunate enough to have twelve older brothers and sisters from both his parents previous marriages. Val and Anne Urlacher were married on April 13, 1944. They stayed on the family farm until 1949. The family moved numerous times, as Val worked for a Seismic Crew and finally settled in Devon in 1956, where they resided and raised their children until moving to Red Deer in 1987 to be closer to family. Val worked for Imperial Oil Ltd. for thirty-two years until his retirement at age 65. Val and Anne were blessed to celebrate their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary in 1994 with many family and friends present before Anne’s sad passing that same year. Over the years, Val was active with the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed baseball, softball, golfing, dancing, traveling, playing cards, reading, drinking coffee and talking and visiting with friends and family. Val was a pleasant, kind, caring, dependable man who laughed lots, enjoyed life to the fullest and touched the hearts of many. He will be lovingly missed by his three children, Harold (Donna) of Devon, Timothy of Red Deer and Valerie (Wade) Ackerman of Red Deer; two grandchildren, Ryan and Alysia Ackerman; his brother, George Schafer of Rimbey, as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Val was predeceased by his loving wife, Anne, his parents, and five brothers and six sisters. Prayers will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820 – 45th Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5508 – 48A Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Alto-Reste Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta.
