SCHMELZER 1920 - 2008 "And this is the promise that He has promised us – eternal life." 1 John 2:25 Roy Gilbert Schmelzer slipped quietly from this world with nieces, Sharon and Pat by his side, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the age of 88 years. Roy was born on January 2, 1920 at Whitla, Alberta to Fred and Emma Schmelzer. He attended school at Rocky Lake until grade 8. At the age of 15, Roy purchased land from the Hudson Bay Company with the money he earned while trapping. He farmed during the summer and worked in nearby coal mines during the winters. Roy traveled to Camrose, Alberta to enlist in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp in 1940. He volunteered to take a mechanics course in Calgary and then at the heavy repair shops in Ottawa. He answered the call for volunteers to go overseas and joined the Royal Regiment of Canada, serving as a bren gunner and left for France. Roy suffered a gunshot wound to the eye and was sent home on the Queen Mary, November 28, 1944. He was united in marriage with Iris Tubman on March 6, 1943 at Munster, Ontario. They made the area around Richmond, Ontario home, where they farmed from 1945-1968 until Iris’ health worsened. Moving into Richmond after selling the farm, Roy continued to work in the plumbing and heating industry for the next 15 years. He moved out west after the passing of Iris to be closer to his family. Roy is survived by a brother, Len (Doris) Schmelzer of Red Deer, three sisters-in-law, Reta Schmelzer of Rocky Mountain House, Eunice Lewis of Carlton Place, Ontario, Sandra Tubman of Richmond, Ontario, and a cousin, Roy (Evelyn) Zuberbier of Chilliwack, British Columbia, nieces and nephews, Sharon (Dennies) Vierboom, Valerie Jones, Brian (Cheryil) Schmelzer, Jack (Lisa) Schmelzer, Bill Schmelzer, Pat (Ron) Ough, Roy (Gail) Schmelzer, Bonnie (Don) Whitlock, Debbie Kliesinger, Cheryl (Paul) Jorgenson, Brenda (Tim) DeBock, Ken Schmelzer and numerous grand nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his wife, Iris (1996), his parents, Fred (1944) and Emma (1971), a sister, Vera Hoel (2004), five brothers, Vernon (1996), Earl (1930), Arthur (1992), Lloyd (1937), Martin (1994), twins Tinnie and Sonnie (1929), an uncle and aunt, Albert (1978) and Gladys (1974) Zuberbier, two sisters-in-law, Joyce (1990), Muriel (2008), a cousin, Laurie Zuberbier, a nephew, Morrie and two nieces, Linda Mayer and Darlene Kueben. There will be two Funeral Services that will be held (Service One) at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #8, 4911 - 49 Street, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. (Service Two) the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Baseline and Bayshore Drive), Ottawa, Ontario on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. (Noon). Interment to be held at Munster Union Cemetery.
