THORDARSON, 1913 - 2007 Sveinn Thordarson of Red Deer passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. He was born on January 10, 1913 in Reykjavik, Iceland, the third of seven children. Sveinn was home schooled by his father up to high school. He subsequently pursued his secondary education in Denmark and Germany, obtaining a PhD in Physics. After completing university, he taught Physics and Math at Akureyri in Northern Iceland. He later became Dean of Laugarvatn College. Sveinn married his high school sweetheart Thorunn and they raised three children. In 1959, the family moved to Canada. Sveinn taught at Abbotsford, Fairview and Grande Prairie before coming to LTCHS. In 1964 he became a member of the original staff of the Red Deer College as professor of Physics. Sveinn taught at the college until his retirement in 1983. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with family. He enjoyed cross country skiing, hiking and camping, as well as reading and listening to classical music. Sveinn was predeceased by his wife Thorunn (Tota), son-in-law Orn Ingolfsson, five brothers and a sister. He leaves to mourn his loss his three children and their families: Marino (Svana) of Reykjavik, Iceland; Thor (Mona) of Red Deer and Ellen Ingolfsson of Red Deer, a brother and many relatives in Iceland. He was dearly loved by his twelve grandchildren: Sveinn, Sverrir, Tota, Ella, Nyja, Sando, Kara, Layla, Joanna, Kathy, Inga and Elin. He was also blessed with ten great grandchildren: Marino Oli, Alexander Emil, Mani, Isabella, Lilja Ros and Ellen Nina, in Iceland, and Mariah, Sveinn, Luke and Destiny in Red Deer. A Public Memorial Service will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820 - 45 Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Red Deer Unit, 4730 Ross Street.
