WESTERGAARD Valborg (Val) Margrethe Sept. 5, 1922 - Nov. 9, 2008 Mrs. Val Westergaard, beloved wife of Elmer Westergaard, passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital the morning of November 9, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Val was born at Wessington Springs, South Dakota on September 5, 1922 to parents John and Sophie Larsen. In 1925 Val, along with her parents and four sisters immigrated to the Hoadley, Alberta area where they farmed throughout Val's childhood. In 1939, Val came to the Danish community of Dickson, Alberta to attend high school and it was here that she met the love of her life Elmer Westergaard. Val and Elmer were married on March 24, 1942 in Camrose, Alberta and then settled in Dickson, Alberta where together they farmed all of their life. Val was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and devoted much of her time to church events and to the Dickson Luther League as well as all other types of community events. Val enjoyed helping on the farm and loved her flowers and her gardening but her greatest love was her family, her home and the countless friends that were always welcome at the house and around the table. Val is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Elmer Westergaard, two sisters Ebba (Larsen) and Esther (Lambert), three sons Garry (Pat), Keith (Susana) and Randy (Ellen) nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and relatives as well as a host of friends and acquaintances. She is predeceased by one son Dale, her parents John and Sophie Larsen and four sisters Elisabeth, Lora, Helen and Gudrun. A celebration of Val's life will take place at Bethany Lutheran Church in Dickson on November 17, 2008 at 2:00 pm. with internment at the Dickson cemetery to follow.
