Melanie Moertel is having many firsts with Red Deer College. First time in Canada and her first time teaching at Series Summer School of the Arts.

Melanie is from Bamberg, Germany and began her journey in lampworking and making beads in 2003. She travels around the world teaching and has her own work for sale at www.melaniemoertel.com

This year, Melanie is teaching Colourful Stringer Revolution: Advanced Beadmaking Techniques.

“The fun thing about the art class here is that students have a whole week to learn. If they have no studio at home, they can come here, concentrate on their hobby and make more progress than they can in a one-day workshop somewhere else.” Melanie Moertel.

Every summer Series brings artists and enthusiasts from around the province, and even North America. Some study for the five day course, and new this year, the two-day weekend courses. There really is something for everyone.

Carrie Hamilton, Edmonton, is taking her third genre in Melanie’s class, having previously studied Precious Metal Clay and Glass. So what brings her back from the big city every year?

“The calibre of teachers. You have one of the best bead makers around here. Plus, it’s just nice to get away and focus on the craft for a week!”

Melanie, from across the Atlantic, is pleased with her own experience.

“This is a relaxing and beautiful college. I would definitely come back!”

Series: Summer School of the Arts is a hands-on, intensive visual arts program for adults that has been running for over 30 years at Red Deer College. It brings students and instructors from all over the world to learn a new technique or practice a familiar craft for a full week. The program includes a wide variety of courses, including welding, furniture building, photography, painting, printmaking, drawing, glassblowing, flameworking, jewellery and metals, ceramics, mixed media, bronze casting, book arts, and more.

Series runs every year at RDC from June – August. For more information about the classes offered, visit www.rdc.ab.ca/series
