Rebel in the ranks
Here at the Advocate, there are several employees who meet each morning for a “coffee” break. Two people, in particular, always sit in the same spot at the same table. Given that they both have much more seniority than me, it would make sense that this practice would be quietly accepted.
But it is merely a break time, and sometimes my adventurous, mischievous zest kicks in, and I like to mix things up a little. After all, everybody needs bumped from their rut once in a while. It keeps one awake and adds variety to life.
So, when I was among the first arrivals one morning, I deliberately seated myself in one of these “taken” chairs. It created quite a good-natured stir!
In order to be fair and treat each one equally, a couple of days later I repeated the act in the second seat. Again, it caused a friendly ruckus.
For the next few weeks, the break habits continued in the usual form. I walked to their spot as if to sit there a couple times, just to raise a little excitement, but would wander past and relax in another available chair.
A few days ago, I was questioned about a sign in the coffee room. Not having noticed anything unusual, I went to investigate. The picture shows what I read — “Edith is a chair rebel.” The subjects of my banter had retaliated!
A rebel? Me? Who would have ever guessed it!
Their reaction, however, brings with it a challenge. What next?
