Bantam AAA Braves open season with doubleheader sweep

The Red Deer Servus Credit Union Braves opened their bantam AAA baseball season with a doubleheader sweep of the host Calgary Cubs during the weekend.

Darin Fodor cracked a single, double and triple, drove in a run and scored three in the series opener, a 10-4 win. Austin Hammond and Hunter Leslie each stroked a run-scoring single and Jack Henley and Brady Steeves had two hits apiece.

Andrew MacCuaig worked four innings on the Braves mound, allowing three runs on two hits and seven walks, striking out six batters and being called twice on balks. Connor McCallister pitched the final three frames, giving up one run on three hits while walking two batters and fanning two.

Hammond contributed a single, double and triple and knocked in a run as the Braves prevailed 10-8 in the second game. Henley chipped in with two singles, a triple and a RBI, and Ty Moline stroked a single and double.

Fodor threw four innings for Red Deer, surrendering four runs on five hits while walking one batter and fanning three. In his three innings on the Braves mound, Steeves gave up four runs on three hits and a walk, and also recorded one strikeout.

The Braves host Okotoks Red Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Great Chief Park.
