Central Alberta mixed team sits second at provincials


The Central Alberta zone sits second in the mixed team portion of the team competition at the Open provincial 5-pin bowling championships at Heritage Lanes Thursday.

The Central team, which consists of Karie Krutz, David Philpot, Gene Zeibarth, Rhonda Barber, Stacey Hafso and Donna Hort accumulated 32 points, and sit 12 points back of Edmonton and one ahead of Calgary. The North Zone has 29 points and the South only eight following nine of the 25 rounds, which concludes Saturday.

One of the five zones receives a bye in each round with the others meeting in head-to-head competition. Each team uses five of their six bowlers. There are eight points available in each game with the winner of each individual head-to-head competition receiving one point with the winning team picking up three.

The Central Alberta men’s team downed the South Zone 7-1 in their final round Thursday to finish with 30 points, three back of Edmonton and five behind Calgary. The North have 28 and the South 18.

The men’s team includes Open singles champion Gary Baird along with Terry Ell, Shelby Chrest, Kevin Armstrong, Eric Kjos and Anthony Streit.

The Central ladies team of Holly Harris, Jenne Campbell, Barb Taillon, Nancy Gervais, Bonnie Clermont and Shauna Pirie Laisnez are also third with 21 points. Edmonton leads with 47 while Calgary has 43, the North 20 and the South 13.

Teams will play nine more games today, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the final seven Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and finishing at 5 p.m.
