Cougars maul RDC soccer

Cougars 3 Kings 0

Cougars 4 Queens 0

CALGARY — The RDC Kings were given an idea of just how big the gap is between them and the true contenders Wednesday as they fell 3-0 to the Mount Royal University Cougars in Alberta Colleges Soccer League action.

“Our goal this year is to make the playoffs, Mount Royal’s goal is to win the national championship — that kind of puts things into perspective a little bit,” said Kings coach Steve Fullarton.

“They are the top team in the South and it just goes to show how far we have to go to compete with teams like that.”

The King’s battled hard to hang with the Cougars, but Mount Royal scored on a penalty kick 20 minutes into the contest. The Cougars then scored again early in the second half and out it away with their third.

Brad Hughes was in net for the Kings.

The pressure is now on for them to win their next games Oct. 9 and 10 in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.

“They are two games we must win if we hope to make the playoffs — we definitely can’t lose them,” said Fullarton.

The Queens also had a tough time with the Cougars on Wednesday, losing 4-0.

The Queens managed to stay with the Cougars, but were done in by a mistake 30 minutes in when they let a cougar get in all alone on keeper Caitlyn McDougall and she put the rebound home.

The deficit forced the Queens to open up their play in the second half and they paid for every break down.

“I was really pleased with the way the girls came together in a role they really are not used to, because they truly are an offensive (minded) bunch of lassies,” said Queens coach David Colley. “They are quite attack minded and once you ask them to look at the defensive side of things that will be a big change for them but they did it real well. They made one mistake and Mount Royal exploited that one mistake.”

The Queens are also in Medicine Hat and Lethbridge next.
