Defending Olympic champ MacLennan takes gold medal at Canada Cup; Red Deer’s Sohn wins a silver

NEWMARKET, Ont. — Reigning Olympic champion Rosie MacLennan closed out the Canada Cup by winning gold in individual trampoline on Sunday.

MacLennan topped the field with a total of 159.505 points, while Olympian Karen Cockburn, who won bronze at the 2000 Games and silver in 2004 and 2008, finished second with 153.225 points. Fellow national team member Samantha Sendel of Aurora, Ont., was third with 152.780.

“I maintained the height and technique I wanted, even though yesterday’s prelim routine was stronger,” said MacLennan, of King City, Ont.

Cockburn, 33, returned to national competition in May after taking a 14-month hiatus from the sport to start a family.

“I’m happy I got to come in and get the results I wanted,” she said. “I’ve lost muscle mass in my legs so jumping high is a challenge, but I’ve got my style and form back.”

In the men’s individual trampoline, Keegan Soehn of Red Deer, won silver with 159.925 points. Japan’s Tetsuya Sotomura took the gold with 164.685 points, and Daniel Schmidt of Germany won bronze with 153.920.

“Today I worked on keeping calm and tried to think of it as just another practice, which seems to have paid off,” said Soehn.

Double mini trampoline gold went to Denis Vachon of Burlington, Ont., who scored 147.900 points. Soehn picked up another silver with 145.400, and Dennis Oppenlander of Regina earned bronze with 144.200. Tamara O’Brien of Coquitlam, B.C. won the women’s title.

In tumbling, Canadian men’s champion Jon Schwaiger of Burlington won the men’s title and Rachael Letsche of Great Britain took home the women’s gold.
