Ivanic commits to Queens
RDC basketball Queens head coach Dawn Smyth took another step in revitalizing her program when she announced Lisa Ivanic has committed for next season.
Ivanic, a five-foot-nine guard-forward from Foremost, is averaging 42 points and 17 rebounds with her 1A high school team.
Ivanic attended the Basketball Alberta Centre of Performance, which is for the top 25 rated high school players in the province. She is the second member of the Centre of Performance to commit to RDC, joining shooting guard Megan Ivancic of Spruce Grove.
“Lisa is a tough player who can play the outside, but also has learned how to post up,” said Smyth. “She played 1A ball, but it’s a good league and she’ll be ready to play at this level.”
Ivanic will take kinesiology.
Both Ivanic and Ivancic have been awarded the Marquis scholarship, which is a new full-ride scholarship offered the top athletes in the Kings and Queens programs.
• Two members of the Queens hockey team have been selected to the All-Conference teams.
Forward Karla Bourke was named to the first team and defenceman Lindsay Hogg to the second team.
Bourke joins Elana Lovell of the University of Calgary on the first-team at wing with Melody Howard of MacEwan at centre, Katie Urness of the U of C in goal and Christie McCarthy of SAIT and Melissa Zubick of the U of C on defence.
Emily Hnatiuk, a native of Bentley, who is attending MacEwan College, joins Hogg on the second-team defence. SAIT’s Lindsay Coghlan is in net with Tonya Faasse of SAIT at centre and Shelby Davey of the U of C and Heidi Kleinsasser of SAIT on the wing.
• Hogg was also honoured as one of the two Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference female athletes of the week.
Hogg, who was playing with a separated shoulder, was outstanding for the Queens despite losing twice to Mount Royal in the ACAC quarter-finals.
Mount Royal goaltender Sarah Oswald shared the athlete of the week award with Hogg.
