Kings, Queens clip Griffins

EDMONTON — In the fight for playoff positioning, the RDC Queens women’s volleyball team struck a major victory Friday night sweeping the Grant MacEwan University Griffins 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-20).

The two teams entered the weekend with identical 11-7 records and tied for the fourth spot in the Alberta Colleges Women’s Volleyball League. The Queens can wrap up fourth spot with another win this afternoon at 1 p.m. with the men following at 3 p.m.

“Everybody was pretty complete tonight, we had good play from every spot on the floor and our athletes won the battle with their player on the other side of the floor,” said Queens head coach Talbot Walton. “It was the complete package tonight.”

The Queens were led by Jaclyn Neufeld with who had seven kills, two digs and one stuff block, while Robyn Denney had 11 kills, four digs and one stuff block.

Meanwhile the Kings, are in an even tighter battle for playoff position with three schools tied for third at 13-5 heading into the weekend, and they did their best to at least keep pace by beating the Griffins 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20).

But coach Aaron Schulha says they still need to be better.

“We let the second set slip away . . . they led the entire set but I thought a lot of that had to do with our errors, and then in the fourth set we were up pretty big in the middle of the set and then we got a little lackadaisical at the end,” he said. “That’s stuff we need to make sure we are cleaning up. Two-and-a-half sets isn’t good enough for this time of the year.”

Taylor Hunt led the Kings with 18 kills, three digs and three stuff blocks while Boston Maris collected player of the game honours with six kills, one dig and five stuff blocks.

l The Kings and Queens will have a pregame ceremony honoring their graduating players today. The Queens are graduating second year players Megan Skory, and Robyn Denney, third year players Jaclyn Neufeld and Tarah Truant, and fifth year player Mandy Carroll. The Kings will be honouring: second year player Darcee Froese and third year players Taylor Hunt and Andy Inglis.
