Kings, Queens win games at SAIT
Kings 0 Trojans 0
CALGARY — The RDC Kings got their first real test of the Alberta Colleges Men’s Soccer League Saturday afternoon and they came through it just fine.
The Kings battled the SAIT Trojans to a 0-0 tie, something that left Kings head coach Steve Fullarton smiling.
“I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “It was a fantastic effort against a very good side and on a field we’re not used to.”
The Trojans play on artificial turf and it took the Kings some time to get used to it.
“It was an adventure early on, but overall we did an excellent job, especially defensively,” he said. “We restricted them to long shots for the most part.”
But the Trojans did get an excellent chance in the final minute, but RDC keeper Brad Hughes made a brilliant leaping save.
“It was unbelievable,” said Fullarton. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. The ball was in the top corner until he got his hand on it.”
While the Kings didn’t score themselves, they did have some chances.
“A couple good ones, but we’ll take the tie, especially on the road against one of the top sides in the league,” said Fullarton.
The Kings sit with a 2-0-1 record with SAIT at 1-0-2.
Queens 2 Trojans 1
The Queens, 3-0-0, weren’t facing one off the better teams, but it looked like it for the first 45 minutes.
The Trojans, 0-3-0, held a 1-0 lead on a breakaway goal by Courtney Thomas heading into the second half.
“The surface may have had a little to do with it, but I think we came in over confident,” said Queens head coach Dave Colley. “It just was a poor effort on our part. “We had a little chat at the half and made a couple of changes and we got things going a little bit in the second half.”
Katelyn LaGrange tied the score on a perfectly placed shot to the top corner and Stephanie Tremblay notched the winner on a penalty kick.
Midfielder Julie Farmer was named the RDC player of the match.
The RDC matches against Mount Royal today have been postponed due to wet grounds and will be played Sept. 29.
RDC is at home next weekend, hosting Medicine Hat Saturday, with the women kicking off at 2 p.m., and Lethbridge Sunday, with a noon start.
