Laing is outstanding for Marlins at meet

EDMONTON — Brendan Laing of the Red Deer Marlins Swim Club turned in an outstanding performance at the provincial championships during the weekend.

Laing captured three gold and a silver in the boys’ eight-and-under division.

He won the 25-metre butterfly in 19.80 seconds, the 25m freestyle in 18.07 seconds and the 50m freestyle in 38.50 seconds. He was second in the 25m breaststroke in 25.12 seconds.

Meanwhile, Catherine Alcorn came home with a silver and two bronze and Chase Desrosiers a silver and a bronze.

Alcorn placed second in the girls’ open 800m freestyle in 10 minutes 34.79 seconds while taking third in the 15-and-over 100m butterfly in 1:14.90 and the 15-16 year-old 200m Individual Medley in 2:45.11. She was fifth in the 13-and-over 200m freestyle.

Desrosiers was second in the 15-16 year-old boys’ 200m I.M. in 2:32.37 and third in the 13-and-over 400m freestyle in 4:48.79. He placed fourth in the 15-16 100m breaststroke.

Jillian Engler and Taylor Laing both won a bronze.

Engler was third in the 14-and-under girls’ 100m butterfly in 1:23.20 while finishing fourth in the 13-14 year-old 200m I.M.

Laing placed third in the 9-10 year-old girls’ 25m butterfly in 17.39 seconds.

As well Adrian Christ was fifth in the 13-14 year-old boys’ 100m freestyle.

The Marlins also picked up four medals in the relays.

The boys’ 15-16 year-old boys’ team took second in the 200m freestyle and third in the 200m medley while the girls’ eight-and-under won bronze in both the 100m freestyle and medley relays.
