Athlete of week
Ten-year-old Rebecca Smith made an impression for the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club during the club’s Valentine meet. Smith broke club records in the 400-metre freestyle, 50 and 100m breaststroke, 100m butterfly and 100m Individual Medley while also setting a provincial record in the 400m freestyle with a time of four minutes 53.56 seconds. The time was the fastest recorded in Canada in the 10-and-under group for the 2010-11 season.
Grizzlys lose final game of season to Bobcats
The Olds Grizzlys closed out their Alberta Junior Hockey League regular-season schedule on a negative note Saturday.
Taylor Bourne and Brett Printz scored for the Grizzlys in a 3-2 loss to the host Lloydminster Bobcats, who got goals from Kyle Bowen, Jeremie Perron and Cooper Limb.
Winning netminder Kraymer Barnstable stopped 23 shots, while Brandon Thiessen made 29 saves for Olds.
The Grizzlys finished with a 23-30-0-7 record and in fifth place in the South Division.
Olds will meet the fourth-place Calgary Mustangs in a divisional quarter-final, with dates to be announced.
KFC Chiefs down Lakers
The Red Deer KFC Chiefs downed the Sylvan Lake Lakers 8-2 in atom AA hockey action Saturday.
Cooper Jones and Josh Tarzwell scored twice each for the Chiefs with Hunter Leslie, Hunter Marchildon, Connor Dawes and Levi Amundson adding single markers. Devon Carroll finished with 30 saves in goal. Austin Gallant and Brett Porter connected for the Lakers.
Hockey team scores shutouts at Games
HALIFAX, N.S. — Team Alberta got off to a quick start in the female hockey at the Canada Winter Games. Alberta, which includes defencemen Hannah Mousak of Olds and Taryn Baumgardt of Innisfail — both members of the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs major midget team, beat B.C. 4-0 and Newfoundland 10-0.
Baumgardt had an assist against Newfoundland. Meanwhile in figure skating, Bryce Chudak of Rocky Mountain House is fourth after the short program in the pre-novice men’s singles.
The freeskate goes Wednesday.
Rebels Black wins semifinal
Gabe Bast’s goal at 10:16 of the third period held up as the winner as the Red Deer Rebels Black downed Airdrie 4-3 Saturday and won the best-of-three division semifinals 2-0.
Tyler Steenbergen, Dylan Houston and Teegan Kooman added the other goals for the Rebels while Joey Desrosiers made 39 saves in goal. His mates had 37 shots.
The Rebels Black will face the Rebels White in the division final.
