Warrener finishes first in three freestyle ski events
Megan Warrener of the Central Alberta Freestyle Ski Club turned in three winning performances in the first Alberta Association provincial meet of the season at Grande Prairie during the weekend.
Warrener finished first in each of the F5 slopestyle, moguls and big air events. Meanwhile, Jacki Warrener was victorious in the F3 slopestyle and big air events and placed second in the moguls.
The other Central Alberta Club winner was Garett Northey in the M3 slopestyle event.

Five chosen for U15 volleyball team
Five Red Deer athletes were selected to the Parkland Zone 4 U15 girls’ volleyball team to compete in the Alberta Winter Games, Feb. 4-7 in the Bonnyville/Cold Lake area.
Thea McLachlin, Rachelle Fallis, Shauntelle Hogg, Jessica Van Mulligen and Kendra Sorensen will represent Red Deer joining Laura Mactaggart of Lacombe, Jana Heck and Sydney Weller of Daysland, Mikayla Bendfeld of Strome, Dana Snethun and Ryelee Lang of Killam and Navada Jessiman of Rosalind.
Ryan Popowich of New Norway is the coach.
Minor Hockey
Bantam
The Red Deer Frontier Chiefs got three goals from Tyler Chavez-Leach in downing Sundre 6-2 in A league action Saturday.
Ross Heidt added a pair of goals and Michael Pruss one.
Zane Steeves made 34 saves in goal.
Peewee Girls
The Red deer Sutter Fund Chiefs Team 1 split a pair of A games during the weekend, downing Stettler 3-2 in league action Saturday and dropping a 4-2 decision to the Olds Thunder in exhibition play Sunday.
Becky Davidson scored all three goals against Stettler, who got goals from Keilsie Litke and Kaitlin Fisher.
Emily Lachance and Shaina Davis connected for Red Deer against Olds, who got two goals from Quinci Jones and one each from Nicole Schultz and Cassidy Belsher.
Catalinas finish third at Edmonton invitational
The Red Deer Catalina Swim Club finished third in the annual Edmonton Keyano Blue Bears Invitational meet during the weekend.
Six members of the Catalina Club reached qualifying times for the Western Nationals.
Becky Miller, 15, qualified in the 1,500-metre freestyle with Amy Andrew, 15, in the 1,500m freestyle and 100m butterfly, Morgann Bruin, 15, in the 200m butterfly, Nicole Cossey, 17, in the 200m butterfly, Halle Loyek, 13, in the 50m freestyle and Alana Skocdopole, 15, in the 400m freestyle.
Emma Smith, 11, (800m freestyle), Lainie Wareham, 12, (200m butterfly), Emma MacDermaid, 11, (200m backstroke), Paul DeMaere (1,500m freestyle) and Nathan Stayer (200m butterfly) all reached provincial A qualifying standards. Jack Barschel, 9, had a provincial B qualifying time in the 100m breaststroke.
In the 10-and-under division, Rebecca Smith, 9, had A qualifying times in all seven of her events while Michelle Wu. 10, qualified in three events and Kristen Trepanier, 10, in six.
One of the highlights of the meet saw the 4x50-metre medley girls’ 15-16 year-old relay team of Kaitlyn Little, Skocdopole, Bruin and Andrew break the club record.
Grizzlys host Crusaders tonight
The Olds Grizzlys enter tonight’s 7:30 p.m. Alberta Junior Hockey League game against the visiting Sherwood Park Crusaders with a measure of momentum on their side.
The Grizzlys are coming off Saturday’s 4-0 win over the host Bonnyville Pontiacs in which Jordan Kwas scored twice and Brayden Hopfe blocked 30 shots for the shutout. Kwas also drew an assist on a goal by Corey Campbell.
Taylor Elliott also tallied for the Grizzlys, who fired 33 shots at Pontiacs netminder Julien Laplante.
The victory took some of the sting out of the Grizzlys’ 6-2 loss to the Oil Barons Friday at Fort McMurray.
Rustlers win, tie on weekend
The Red Deer Rustlers earned three of four points in a pair of junior women’s hockey league games at the Centrium Saturday.
The Rustlers lost 3-2 to Spruce Grove in a shootout then downed Sherwood Park 1-0.
Taryn Zimmer and Brianna Purvis gave Red Deer a 2-0 lead against Spruce Grove, who tallied twice in the third period, once with 41 seconds remaining to force the five-minute extra period and eventually the shootout, which they won 1-0.
Tannis Duffy finished with 36 saves while the Rustlers had 43 shots on goal.
Duffy made 20 saves to record the shutout against Sherwood Park with Chasity Knibb scoring the lone goal at 18:33 of the first period.
The Rustlers visit Holden Friday and Irma Sunday.
Chinook Hockey League
One day after being trampled by the host Lloydminster Border Kings, the Innisfail Eagles turned in a markedly improved Chinook Hockey League effort.
But the Eagles still came out on the short end of a 4-2 count Sunday, their goals coming from Ian Brander and Andrew Mackenzie.
Archie Henderson stopped 34 shots for Innisfail, while Lloydminster netminder B.J. Boxma made 22 saves.
The Eagles fell 8-1 to the Border Kings Saturday, getting their lone marker from Ryan Kallis. Henderson made 26 saves and Boxma turned aside 18 drives.
Meanwhile, the West Central Alberta Rams earned a single point in their weekend home-and-home with the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs.
The Rams secured the point in a 3-2 overtime loss Friday at Sylvan Lake.
Jordan Ramstead was outstanding in the West Central net, making 37 saves while giving up a pair of goals to Red Deer product Kyle Pess, including the overtime winner.
Chiefs netminder David Tetrault blocked 25 shots while surrendering goals to Luke Hanna and Joel Barrett.
The Rams didn’t fare as well Saturday at Fort Saskatchewan, falling 9-4. Barrett, Richard Turville, Matt Murphy and Rob Turville scored in a losing cause, while Ramstead made 26 saves and Tetrault made 23.
Junior B Hockey
The Red Deer Vipers employed a balanced attack in a 5-5 Heritage Junior B Hockey League tie with the host Okotoks Bisons Sunday afternoon.
Scoring for the Vipers were Justin Klassen, Brennen Tymchyshyn, Maverick Blair, Jordan Koopmans and Mario Cote. Jason Pohl and Mike Stonehouse combined to make 41 saves for Red Deer, which trailed 2-1 after one period and led 3-2 heading into the final frame.
The Vipers, who are in Blackfalds Tuesday to face the Wranglers at 7:30 p.m., fired 39 shots at Bisons netminder Christian Chivilo and were assessed 12 of 20 minor penalties.
• In other action Sunday the Blackfalds Wranglers downed High River 9-3 as Kyle Maas scored three times, Scott Maetche twice and David Jantzie, Jason Bell, Brant Leischner and Jared Williams once each.
Tanner Schalin made 20 saves in goal.
• The Stettler Lightning were 6-2 losers to the visiting Bisons Saturday.
Clayton Herzog scored both goals for the Lightning, who got a 26-save effort from the combinaton of Landon Schmidt and Jarvis Bender while holding a 36-32 advantage in shots.
• In another Saturday outing, the host Ponoka Stampeders were 8-5 losers to the Cochrane Generals. Wyatt Watson, with two goals, Travis Kirchner, Scott Bowkett and Jordan Duthie scored for the Stamps.
