Jantzie leads Wranglers over Thrashers
BLACKFALDS — David Jantzie scored three times to lead the Blackfalds Wranglers to a 7-5 victory over the Three Hills Thrashers in Heritage Junior B Hockey League play Sunday.
Josh McIlravey, Kurtis Ross, Ryan Stephens and Kyle Maas added single markers for the Wranglers, who trailed 4-3 after the second period.
Scott Bell scored a pair of goals for the Thrashers, while Keith Van Bavel, Kevin Koustrup and Ian Vandenhanenberg added single markers.
Adam Gingras finished with 28 saves for the Wranglers, who had 43 shots on Thrashers netminder Mitch Dube.
Blackfalds took 11 of 18 minor penalties, while the teams split two majors and two game misconducts. Three Hills also took a match penalty.
Optimist Rebel named as all-star
Red Deer Optimist Rebels defenceman Cory Kloss was named to the Alberta Midget Hockey League’s South Division all-star team, which will compete in the 20th annual all-star game Feb. 1 at the Clairview Arena in Edmonton.
Kloss joins Calgary Royals Patrick Howey on the defence, while Sam Brittain of the Calgary Buffaloes is in goal, Simon Skrudland of the Royals is at centre, Ty Rattie of the UFA Bisons is on right wing and Brock Hirsche of the Lethbridge Y’s Men Titans is on the left side.
Lethbridge coaching staff will handle the south squad.
The first team all-stars were selected by the league coaches. The remainder of the team will be announced later this week.
Carstar too much for Orangemen
Mark Salkeld dropped in 21 points to lead Carstar to an 81-72 victory over the Orangemen in Central Alberta Senior Men’s Basketball Association play Sunday.
Darryl Hemstreet added 18 points for the winners, while Taylor Armstrong had 14 for the Orangemen.
Minor hockey
Midget
The Red Deer Canyon Chiefs won a pair of AA league games during the weekend, beating the Airdrie Lightning 5-3 Saturday and the Okotoks Oilers 6-5 Sunday.
Clayton Petrie had a pair of goals against the Lightning with Cody Hagg, Brett Printz and Troy Klaus adding one each. Cale McBeath made 29 saves in goal.
Hagg, Dustin Reykdal, Ryley Bennett, Printz, Klaus and Justin Pye scored against the Oilers, while goaltender Curtis Ennis made 26 saves.
Bantam
The Red Deer Steel Kings came home from a weekend road trip to Southern Alberta with three of a possible four points in AA league play.
The Kings downed the Taber Golden Suns 5-2 and tied the Lethbridge Raiders 2-2.
Logan Fisher and Tyson Crampain scored twice each against Taber, with Spencer Yeats adding a single marker.
Jordy Potter and Seth Hallman connected against Lethbridge.
• In B league play, Red Deer Northwest Motors downed Blackfalds 5-3, with Taylor Packard scoring twice and adding an assist on a goal by Logan Marshall that tied the score late in the second period.
Braden Sparks notched the game-winner in the third period, with Chris Bradley scoring an insurance marker.
Alec Mitchell, who played the third period, and Mack Patchett combined to make 23 saves in goal for Red Deer.
Bantam Girls
The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs edged Olds 4-3 to win the Innisfail A tournament during the weekend.
Jade Petrie led the Chiefs with three goals, including the winner with four minutes remaining in the third period.
Taylor Hall tied the game early in the final frame.
The Chiefs reached the final by beating Innisfail and Edmonton and tying Olds and Calgary in the round-robin.
Pee Wee
The Red Deer Nabors Chiefs had a pair of wins against the Camrose Drillers — 4-2 Saturday and 8-2 Sunday — in A league play during the weekend.
Tayler Sincennes had two goals for the Chiefs Saturday, with Carter Sawicki and Nolan Dyck potting single markers.
Blake Vanderlinden and Sincennes had three goals each Sunday, while Riley Sibbet and Sawicki added single markers.
Minor soccer
U18 Girls
The Red Deer United tier II soccer team opened the second half of their season in style, downing the Calgary Blizzard Avalanche 3-1 in the final of the Calgary Minor Soccer Association tournament during the weekend.
Claire Wallace led the United attack with a pair of first-half goals, with Moira Duley connecting in the second half.
Lauren Good turned in another solid performance in the United goal.
The Red Deer crew reached the final after posting a 3-0 record in preliminary play, beating the Calgary Blizzard Lions 12-1, downing the Avalanche 2-1 and defeating Lethbridge 5-3.
Rachel Gaudry scored four times against the Lions, with Duley and Sara Codd potting three goals apiece and Wallace one. The Lions also scored an own goal.
Allison Taylor and Wallace scored against the Avalanche, while Gaudry and Codd each had two goals and Shannon Meinen one against Lethbridge.
U16 Boys
The Renegades X squad downed the Renegades Y team 5-2 in an all-Red Deer Edmonton League contest.
Nathan Narong scored three times for the winners, with Kris Mancuso and Josh Cruickshank adding single markers. Nick Dehod scored both goals in a losing cause.
U16 Girls
Paula Dedensky’s goal stood up for the Red Deer United Tier II team in a 1-0 win over Lethbridge in the gold-medal final of the Calgary tournament.
United was undefeated during the weekend, opening with a 2-1 win over the Calgary NSD Suns and then earning a 3-3 tie with Lethbridge and downing the Calgary Chinook Royals 5-1.
Dedensky and Terra Simon scored against the Suns, Kristin Tisdale, Natassia Wright and Sinead Stein connected against Lethbridge and Angela Vanderberg tallied twice and Dedensky, Tisdale and Kayla Whissell each scored once in the win over the Chinook Royals.
Keeper Allison Doll was outstanding during the entire tournament.
U14 Boys
Colin Heslop and Jordan Ashton scored for the Red Deer United Tier III squad in a 4-2 loss to Edmonton Millwoods.
