Braves split four games in bantam AAA action
CALGARY — The Red Deer Servus Credit Union Braves split four games in bantam AAA baseball league action during the weekend.
The Braves lost 8-7 to the St. Albert Cardinals in eight innings and downed the Sherwood Park A’s Saturday. On Sunday they lost 6-5 to the Edmonton Cardinals and downed Calgary 11-1.
Mac Guckert had a pair of doubles in the loss to St. Albert while Jonah Penner, Reign Letkeman and Brandon Ballantyne had two singles each.
Tyson Ethier started on the mound and allowed three earned runs on six hits over four innings while Jonah Penner also gave up three earned runs on four hits in taking the loss.
Penner had a single and a double in the win over the A’s while Taylor Mulder added two singles and Nathan Damiani a triple.
Guckert started on the hill and allowed one hit and no runs over four innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Zak Hicks went the final inning, allowing two runs — one earned — on two hits.
On Sunday, Mulder and Jason Garrett both had a single and a double against Edmonton while Damiani added a double.
Mulder pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits while fanning eight.
Mike Pinkney took the loss as he gave up one run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Reign Letkeman went the distance in beating Calgary in five innings.
He allowed four hits and fanned four.
Hicks had a pair of singles with Penner adding a triple and Ballantyne a double.
Bandits finish third at provincial championship
EDMONTON — The Red Deer N. Jensen’s Bandits finished third out of 13 teams in the provincial intermediate B ladies fastball championships during the weekend.
The Bandits posted a 3-1 record in round-robin pool play then downed the four-time provincial champion Edmonton ODB 7-5 in a tie-breaker before running out of gas and losing 14-0 to the Calgary Renegades in the semifinal.
Brandy McLeod, Heidi Chant and Alana Stefanik worked on the mound in the tie-breaker while Stefanik was the winning pitcher in a 3-2 win over the ODB in their final round-robin game.
The Bandits only loss in pool play was a 4-2 setback at the hands of the Red Deer Panthers, who the Bandits meet in a best-of-three series in the Red Deer Ladies Fastball Association semifinal this week. The Topco Sliders face the Budal Ice in the other semifinal.
Both series go Tuesday, Wednesday and if necessary, Thursday at 7 p.m. at Great Chief Park.
Minor Soccer
U18 Tier II Boys
The Red Deer Renegades edged the Edmonton Strikers 1-0 in the Edmonton Interdistrict Youth Soccer Association league play.
Aryan Aiam scored a late goal to give the Renegades the victory. Brad Hughes recorded the shutout with Nathan Brouwer, Arie Testroete and Joe Ziebart playing strong defensive games.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Red Deer crew and left them in a tie for first place.
U14 Tier II Girls
In a battle of the league’s top two teams the Red Deer Renegades got a late goal from U12 Tier I pick up Cierra Stephens to tie the Edmonton Strikers 2-2 in EIYSA play at Edgar Park Sunday.
The Renegades remain in first place with an 8-0-3 record while the Strikers sit at 8-1-1.
The two meet once more this season.
The Renegades jumped into a 1-0 lead in the first half as Sydney Daines took a Laryssa Ubels pass and scored from five-metres out. The Strikers tallied twice early in the second half before Daines found Stephens streaking down the right side for the equalizer.
U12 Tier I Girls
The Red Deer Renegades downed 1-0 Edmonton Scottish United 2-0 in EIYSA play.
Cierra Stephens scored the lone goal.
Marlins win aggregates
The Red Deer Marlins won five aggregate medals at the Ponoka Gators Invitational and one at the Edmonton Huma Invitational during the weekend.
The Marlins dominated the eight-and-under girls’ division in Ponoka with Claire Halford taking gold, Isabel Adams silver and Kyra McMurray bronze.
Geordan Andrew won bronze in the nine-10 year-old boys’ division and Avinash Badoni took third in the 11-12 year-old boy’s category.
In Edmonton, Catherine Alcorn placed third in the girls’ 15-16 year-old division.
In Ponoka, Halford won the 50-metre freestyle in 46.13 seconds, the 100m Individual Medley in two minutes 6.45 seconds and the 25m freestyle in 20.91 seconds.
Adams captured the 25m backstroke in 25.44 seconds while taking second in the 25 and 50m butterfly and 100m I.M.
McMurray won the 25m butterfly in 25.86 seconds while finishing second in the 25m freestyle and third in the 50m freestyle.
Andrew was second in the 9-10 year-old 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle and in the 14-and-under 100m butterfly. He was also third in the 9-10 year-old 100m I.M.
Badoni won the 50m backstroke in 59.46 seconds to go with a third in both the 50 and 100m freestyle.
Alcorn won the 15-and-over 100m butterfly in 1:14.33 while finishing second in the 15-16 year-old 200m I.M. and 13-and-over 400m freestyle and third in the 13-and-over 200m freestyle.
