Riggers, Redbirds quickly rained out
The Red Deer Riggers and Calgary Redbirds started their Sunburst Baseball League game at Great Chief Park Tuesday, but the weatherman had the final say.
The game was rained out midway through the first inning after Red Deer starter Brent Lazzarotto worked a hitless top of the first.
No makeup date was announced.
The Riggers will attempt to play tonight in Edmonton against the Angels then will leave Thursday to compete in the annual Kamloops International Baseball Tournament.
The Red Deer squad will face the Everett, Wash., Merchants Friday at 12:30 p.m. PDT.
A win and they play Saturday at noon against the winner of the San Francisco Seals and Kelowna Jays contest.
A loss and they face the loser of the Seal-Jays game at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
The Riggers have added catcher-outfielder Grant Keveder of Lethbridge for the tournament. Keveder played with the Gonzaga University Bulldogs in Spokane.
It’s also been announced the Riggers will host the provincial senior A championships, Aug. 7-9.
Their SBL next home game is Tuesday when they once again host the Redbirds.
Laing gets four medals at Innisfail swim meet
INNISFAIL — Brendan Laing of the Red Deer Marlins Swim Club captured two gold and two silver at the Innisfail Dolphins Meet during the weekend.
Laing won the boys’ eight-and-under 100-metres Individual Medley in one minute 51.87 seconds and the 25m butterfly in 22.52 seconds while finishing second in the 25m backstroke and 25m freestyle.
Taylor Laing won two gold, a silver and a bronze.
She won the 9-10 year-old girls’ 100m I.M. in 1:36.08 and the 25m butterfly in 18.29 seconds while taking second in the 50m breaststroke and third in the 12-and-under 400m freestyle.
Jillian Engler won the girls’ 13-14 year-old 100m breaststroke in 1:26.34 and the 200m I.M. in 2:58.58 and was second in the 50m butterfly.
Sefrah Daviduck captured the 100m freestyle in 1:12.48 in the girls’ 13-14 year-old class while taking third in the 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle.
Mairad Bast won the nine-10 year-old girls’ 50m breaststroke in 47.75 seconds.
Catherine Alcorn won three silver medals in the girls’ open 800m freestyle, the 15-16 year-old 50m butterfly and the 13-and-over 400m freestyle.
Samantha Statchuk was second in the nine-10 year-old 50m freestyle and third in the 100m freestyle while Kahn Daviduck was second in the 15-16 year-old boys’ 100m backstroke.
Isabel Adams took third in the eight-and-under girls’ 25m butterfly and Quinn Daviduck was third in the 15-16 year-old boys’ 100m freestyle.
McCain wins seven medals at championships
Red Deer Titans Track Club’s Kassi McCain of Innisfail won seven medals, including four gold, in the peewee girls’ division at the provincial championships during the weekend.
McCain won the long jump, shot put and ball throw and was second in the 60-metres, 150m and high jump. Meanwhile, Darren Posyluzny of Innisfail won the shot put and was second in the 100m in the master men’s category.
Kendra Sorensen of Red Deer won the midget girls’ shot put while Breann Coupal of Red Deer placed second in the junior women’s shot put and javelin and ninth in the 100m.
Mallory Murphy of Red Deer was second in the youth girls’ hammer throw.
Other top 10 finishes were:
Brayden Posyluzny, Innisfail, bantam boys, sixth 80m hurdles, ninth long jump and shot put.
Sean Bettac, Red Deer, midget boys, seventh 100m.
Cole Sequin, Red Deer, midget boys, eighth 100m.
Nolan Farries, Red Deer, youth men, fifth 800m, seventh 1,500m.
Braves' undefeated run ends in Camrose
The Red Deer Boston Pizza Braves saw their bantam AA baseball league undefeated season come to an end in Camrose during the weekend.
The Braves dropped a pair of games, losing 11-10 to Lacombe Saturday and 7-5 to Beaumont Sunday evening.
They also downed St. Albert 22-2 Sunday.
On Saturday, the Braves trailed Lacombe 8-1 before rallying to grab a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
However, Lacombe scored three times to pull out the victory.
Jeff Ireland was four-for-four and scored twice to lead the Red Deer attack while Reid Stoyberg added a two-run home run and Logan Marshall and Joe Ireland contributed RBI doubles.
Dylan Hollman took the loss in relief of Marshall.
The Braves led Beaumont 5-2 heading into the seventh inning, before giving up five runs.
Joe Ireland took the loss in relief of Hollman, who started and tossed three innings of one-hit, shutout ball.
Stoyberg led the offence with a single and a double while Alec Mitchell and Marshall added a pair of hits each.
Chaz Piché started against St. Albert and worked three innings of three-hit ball with Stoyberg working the final two innings in the game called on the mercy rule.
Stoyberg also drove in five runs with a pair long home runs to centre.
Joe Ireland had three singles, a grand slam home run and drove in seven runs while Alex Heinzlmeir had three hits, scored three times and had three RBIs.
Anand Aggarwal drove in three runs for a double and single and Mitchell had an RBI double and scored three times.
The Braves return to action Wednesday when they host Beaumont at Great Chief Park.
Players selected to all-star team
Five members of the Red Deer Razorbacks have been selected to the West team to compete in the annual all-star game, set for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Great Chief Park.
Infielder Kevin Stelmaschuk, who is also the team manager, outfielder Darcy Warawa, pitcher Quinn Rose and utility players Cody Huseby and Andrew Walker round out the Red Deer contingent.
Rocky Mountain House, Eckville and Blindman Valley will have four players each on the West squad.
Infielder Kelly Ceasor, outfielder Jeremy Brown, pitcher Morgan King and utility player Cam Erickson represent Rocky with infielder Coleman Maddox, outfielder Harlen Griffin, pitcher Riley Poffenroth and utility Kyle French from Eckville.
Infielder Travis Lee, outfielder Dallas Shaw, pitcher Colin Shaw and utility Justin Shipton play with Blindman Valley.
The East squad will be managed by Cam Culp of Beiseker, who is an utility player on his team. Other players from Beiseker include infielder Darren Culp, outfielder Scott Metzger and pitcher Trevor Hagel.
Innisfail, Clive and Lacombe also have four players on the East squad.
Infielder Ray Bergeron, outfielder Corey Tibble, pitcher Matt MacLeod and utility Noel Wyman represent Innisfail with infielder Colby Hayward, outfielder Ron Cook, pitcher Jay Crossland and utility Jeremy Benson from Clive.
Infielder Brandan Huber, outfielder Andre Touchette, pitcher Tim Wasdal and utility Jeff Clark of Lacombe round out the team.
Warren takes second in bodybuilding
Melanie Warren captured second in the World Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation competition in Calgary during the weekend.
The 37-year-old native of Red Deer turned in the strong performance in the master’s 35-and-over division.
Warren, who has been involved in competition for only two years, is in her first year with the World association.
Last year she competed in a different organization and placed fourth, fifth and seventh in three events.
Doherty finishes second, sixth
Matt Doherty of Delburne had a pair of second-place finishes at the Canadian national track and field championships in Toronto.
Doherty was second in both the hammer throw and the shot put while taking sixth in the discus.
Renegades win one on weekend
The Red Deer Renegades U16 Tier II boys soccer team won one of three starts against Tier I teams during the weekend in St. Albert.
The Renegades, who are preparing for a tournament in Scotland, downed Edmonton Juventus 3-1 while losing 2-1 to both the Strikers and Victoria.
Haydn McLean scored twice against Juventus with Nicu Ruicea potting a single marker. Ruicea scored against the Strikers and McLean against Victoria.
Razorbacks lose big to Red Dogs
ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE — The Red Deer Razorbacks started strong, but ran into a string of errors that cost them a 12-2 loss to the Rocky Mountain House Red Dogs in Parkland Baseball League play Tuesday.
The Razorbacks jumped into a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Mike Reiman and Andrew Walker, but that was all their offence could muster against Dogs starter Chris Johnson, who tossed a five-hitter.
Tim Wiebe started for Red Deer and worked five innings allowing seven runs, three of which were earned.
Darcy Warawa went the final two innings and allowed five runs — two earned.
The Razorbacks return to action Friday when they host Innisfail at 8 p.m. at Great Chief Park.
