Canucks beat Grizzlys

CALGARY — Devon Dell turned in a 49-save performance for the Calgary Canucks in a 5-3 Alberta Junior Hockey League win over the Olds Grizzlys Tuesday.

Clay Howe, Brandon Clowes and Craig Gans scored for the Grizzlys, who pretty much dominated the play.

Replying for the Canucks were Jared Wynia with two goals, Tyler Jewitt, Matt Heseltine and Josh Primeau.

Brandon Theissen 23 made saves for the Grizzlys, who return to Calgary Thursday to face the Mustangs and then host the Drayton Valley Thunder Saturday.


High School volleyball

The Hunting Hills Lightning junior varsity girls’ team won a pair of Central Alberta High School League games Monday

They beat Innisfail 25-6, 25-16, 25-16 and Sylvan Lake 25-14, 25-18, 18-25, 25-13.

In other JV action, the Notre Dame girls defeated Central Alberta Christian High School of Lacombe 25-18, 25-23, 26-24.


Ladies Basketball

Veronica DenOudsten dropped in 26 points to lead Lacombe to a 66-44 victory over the North Stars in North Star Sports Ladies’ Basketball League play Monday.

Jody McElroy added 11 points for the winners while Kelsey Sinclair had 14 and Nadine Cunningham 12 for the North Stars.

• The Funk got past the Big Ballers 44-37 as Kim Chalmers had 13 points. Alana Sherba had eight in a losing cause.

• Collins Barrow Storm got 13 points from Krista Sawatsky and 10 each from Andrea Meding and Sanela Sarcevic in downing the Ligers 61-21.

Ashlie Courts had seven points for the Ligers.

• Brenda Dryer dropped in 16 points and Cassandra Armstrong 13 as the Triple threat beat Wild Bills 41-24.

Tricia Gosselin had 10 points for Wild Bills.

• The Hot Shots got 24 points from Monica Lewing and 22 each from Trudie Lefurgie and Erika Pottage in beating The Bank 107-16.

Lindsay White had six points in a losing effort.


Peterman second at Lloydminster

LLOYDMINSTER — Jocelyn Peterman of Red Deer placed second in the Whitney Field Memorial junior women’s bonspiel during the weekend.

Peterman, along with third Brittany Tran, second Rebecca Konschuh and lead Kristine Anderson, had a 4-0 record in round-robin play before losing to defending provincial champion Nadine Chyz 6-4 in the final.

Peterman qualified for the skins game, winning $200 of a possible $500 against the Curtis Bales team.

The Peterman foursome will compete at the Calgary Winter Club this weekend for the right to advance to the 2011 Canada Winter Games, Feb. 11-26 in Halifax.


Cartier nabs scholarship

Sylvan Lake native and Canmore Eagles forward Cody Cartier has earned a U.S. college division I hockey scholarship to Robert Morris and will join the NCAA Colonials at the start of the 2011-12 season.

“We are very pleased for Cody and his family for the opportunity to play division I hockey. He has worked extremely hard to obtain this and the entire organization is very proud of Cody and his success,” Eagles’ head coach/GM Andrew Milne said in a press release.

Cartier, 20, is in his third season with Canmore and sits 16th in Alberta Junior Hockey League scoring with 23 points (7g,16a) in 15 games.

“It has been a goal of mine to play division I hockey for a long time and I am really excited about the opportunity at Robert Morris. I want to thank the entire Canmore Eagles organization, my teammates and my family for helping me achieve this,” said Cartier.


Catalinas finish second at meet

The Red Deer Catalina Swim Club sent 37 members to the Saskatoon Goldfins Invitational meet and finished second overall in the team event.

In total, Catalina swimmers earned 25 gold medals, 29 silver and 20 bronze medallions, and also achieved 249 personal-best times.

“I was really proud of my athletes’ efforts and support for each other,” said head coach Mandi Smith. “Excitement really mounted throughout the weekend as club records began to fall and first-time provincial and national standards were achieved. Everyone continued to build off each other’s successes with fast swimming and contributed to achieve our second-place standing.”

The Catalina swimmers also set 10 club records, achieved by Amy Andrew (15-16 girls 800m free), Emma MacDermaid (11-12 girls 1,500m free), Becky Miller (15-16 girls 50m breaststroke), Rebecca Smith (10-and-under girls 100m, 200m and 400m free, 50m,100m and 200m breast) and the 15-16 girls medley relay team of Halle Loyek, Becky Miller, Alana Skocdopole and Amy Andrew.

In addition, four swimmers attained first-ever qualifying times. The list included Xenia May (400m free MQT), Marcos Horcheck (provincial ‘A’ 500m and 100m free), Paul DeMaere (Age Group National 1,500m free) and Tasheena Sjolie (Western National 100m butterfly).
