Catalinas grab many medals

The Red Deer Catalina Swim Club turned in a pair of impressive performances on the weekend.

Head coach Mandi Smith took 17 qualifying members of the club’s provincial and national squads to the Saskatoon invitational and came home with 24 gold, 25 silver and 22 bronze medals.

Three members of the club reached new Western qualifying standards with two qualifying in the national age group category.

Morgann Bruin had Western qualifying times in the 100 and 200-metre butterfly while Amy Andrew reached the mark in the 50m freestyle and Alana Skocdopole in the 800m freestyle.

Skocdopole and Noelle Makey both had a national age group qualifying marks in the 200m breaststroke.

Nicole Cossey (50m freestyle) and Bryan Illiscupidez (100m I.M.) set new club records.

Meanwhile 46 members of the club’s development and provincial squads attended the Sylvan Lake Nauticals meet, capturing 34 gold, 36 silver and 25 bronze medals.

One of the major highlights was posted by nine-year-old Rebecca Smith, who cut 32 seconds off her previous best time in the 400m freestyle. She finished with a time of five minutes 39.39 seconds, which is the fastest time in the nine-10 year-old group in the province this season.

Beauclair takes two gold at karate tournament

Dylan Beauclair was a double gold medalist for the Red Deer Club at the 2009 Shotokan Karate Alberta kid’s tournament at Hunting Hills Saturday.

Beauclair won both the kata and the kumite titles in the 10-11 year-old brown belt division.

Other results were:

White Belt

6-9 year-old: Kristen Handley, gold kata, silver kumite; Christian DeCastro, silver kata, gold kumite; Patrick Williams, bronze kata, bronze kumite.

10-17 year-old: Moses George, bronze kata, silver kumite; Sam Hudson, bronze kumite.

Yellow Belt

7-10 year-old: Lucus Hawkins, silver kata, bronze kumite; Erica Chow, bronze kata, gold kumite.

11-17 year-old: Martin Swick, bronze kata, bronze kumite.

Green Belt

6-9 year-old: Liam Thorton, gold kata, bronze kumite; Caleb Duckering, silver kata, gold kumite.

11-12 year-old: Jordan Vincent, gold kata, bronze kumite; Tommy Escobar, bronze kata, silver kumite.

Brown Belt

10-11 year-old: Isaiah Flurey, silver kumite; Steven Rell, silver kata, bronze kumite; Dakota Dillon, bronze kata.

12-17 year-old: Justin Naparan, gold kumite.

Fatboys win

Murray Cunningham had 21 points to lead the Sorento Fatboys to an 80-74 victory over the Grandview All-stars in Central Alberta Senior Men’s Basketball Association play Sunday.

Dave Cunningham added 16 points for the winners while Tom West had 21 points and Rick Feser 19 for the All-stars.

Minor Hockey

Midget

The Red Deer Prairie Bus Line Chiefs split a pair of A plus league games during the weekend, losing 5-2 to Rimbey Friday and beating Wetaskiwin 6-4 Sunday.

Brock Forbes and Jordan Hemstad scored against Rimbey. Alex Haldane had two goals and Cody Guhl, Kane Weik, Hemstad and Forbes had one each against Wetaskiwin.

Midget Girls

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs beat Lethbridge 6-3 on the road Saturday and downed Banff 7-0 Sunday at home in A league action.

Lexi Kambeitz had two goals against Lethbridge with Janessa Blair, Haley Cramer, who also had two assists, Rayel Douglas and Ashley Graf potting single markers. Haley Poch had a pair of helpers.

On Sunday, Graf had three goals with singles added by Poch, Emma Malsbury, Kambeitz and Cramer.

Midget 15-year-old

The Red Deer IROC Chiefs got two goals from Brady Bakke in downing the Calgary Canucks 7-1 Saturday.

BJ Duffin, who had three assists, Nick Glackin, Robin Carlson, Adam Ferguson and Dylan Hollman added single markers while Bowin Brachmann had three assists.

Peewee

The Red Deer Parkland Transmission Chiefs split a pair of weekend AA games, falling 3-2 to the Bow Valley Timberwolves at Cochrane and edging ths host Airdrie Lightning 5-4.

Kale Howarth and Brenden Baker scored in the Parkland loss, while Branden Bilodeau made 29 saves

Blake Vander Linden tallied twice in the Chiefs’ victory, with single goals contributed by Andrew Kartusch, Howarth and Baker. Cole Sears made 36 saves for the victory.

• The Red Deer Holiday Inn Chiefs edged Ponoka 6-5 in A league action as Ryan Vandervlis and Curtis Johanson had two goals each and Kyle Rideout and Brenan Frame one apiece. Michael Ozga recorded the win in goal with 33 saves.

• Red Deer Southside tied Safeway 10-10 Friday and lost 13-6 to Bowden Saturday in B play.

Jaxon Thompson had four goals for Southside against Safeway with Brandt Burzuk and Travis Mears potting a pair each and Cole Simon and Kyle Skogen one each.

Skogen scored three times against Bowden with Jesse Andersen, Buzuk and Mears adding single markers.
