Midget AAA Braves finish season with tier II championship
The Red Deer Midget AAA Braves finished their season on a high winning the baseball Alberta tier II provincials in Edmonton, beating the host Cardinals 15-7 in the final on Sunday.
The Braves took over in the bottom of the third inning as Blake Thompson cashed in two runs on a double and then scored on a Griffin Moline RBI single. Triston Hill continued the inning with a double that scored two more runs and Dylan Boreman singled in one more. When the dust settled, the Braves led 11-5 after three innings.
Jordan Muirhead came in to pitch in the top of the fourth and shut down the Cardinals the rest of the way.
Nic Fischer added two more runs on a triple while Jesse Kowalchuk had an RBI single as well.
They got to the final of the consolation provincial tournament by winning all three of their round robin games.
They opened with an 8-7 win over the Calgary Redbirds Black on Friday. In Saturday’s first game, the rode a strong pitching performance by Dylan Boreman and a well rounded attack led them past the Edmonton Cardinals 10-2.
In their final round robin game against Calgary Redbirds Red, Mike Ozga came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 9-8 and put Red Deer into the final. The Braves had led 6-2 , but Calgary rallied to tie it at 7-7, forcing extra innings.
The tier II provincials featured the four teams in the NorWest Baseball League that did not qualify for the tier I provincial championship.
