Nicolls, McMahon top Central Albertans at Maple Leaf Jr. Golf Tour event


LACOMBE — Jared Nicolls of Ponoka carded Sunday’s best score — a 70 — and finished three strokes behind winner Geoff Fry of Calgary in the junior boys division of a Maple Leaf Junior Golf tour event during the weekend.

Nicolls posted an earlier round of 77 and finished with a 36-hole total of 147. Fry shot 70-74 for a 144 total.

Mike Lougheed of Red Deer County placed seventh with a 155 total (78-77), Jeremy Rietze of Lacombe tied for 10th at 161 (81-80) and Chandler McLaren of Ponoka finished 18th at 182 (93-89).

In the juvenile boys division of the qualifying event for the Callaway Junior World Championship in San Diego in July, Jaxon Lynn of Sylvan Lake settled for runner-up status after losing a playoff to Landon Stellingwerff of Calgary. Both golfers shot 74-71—145 over 36 holes.

Logan Hill of Red Deer placed fourth with a 153 score (79-74), with Grant Numrich of Red Deer tying for ninth with a 157 total (79-78), and Red Deer golfers Ryan Morrell (85-84—169) and Jordan Williamson (91-89—180) finishing in respective ties for 20th and 29th.

Red Deer’s Clare McMahon was fourth in the girls category, shooting 87-87 for a 174 total. Daria (88-104—192) and Shaye Leidenius (96-101—197) placed 10th and 11th, while winner Jaclyn Lee of Calgary turned in rounds of 78-76 to finish at 154.

Carter Graf of Red Deer placed second in the bantam boys division with a 162 total than included rounds of 81-81.

Brendan Brown of Calgary cruised to victory, posting rounds of 75-75 for a 149 sum.

Chase Broderson of Lacombe checked in at 178 (91-87), good for seventh place, while Sylvan Lake golfers Jordan Cooke (93-90—183) and Tanner Smith (95-94—189) finished ninth and 12th.

Cole Bergheim of Red Deer won the 18-hole atom boys title with a 73. Logan Graf of Red Deer was third with an 80.

Tyler Watt of Innisfail carded an 81 to finish second to Marko Banic (79) of DeWinton in the peewee boys division.
