Northeast hands Central 5-1 loss at Alberta Cup
STRATHMORE — The Central squad fell 5-1 to the Northeast team Friday to finish ATB Alberta Cup pool play with a 1-2-0 record.
Red Deer’s Seth Stratton notched the lone goal for Central, while netminder Dawson Weatherill of Red Deer made 38 saves. Northeast led 2-1 after one period and 4-1 after 40 minutes and held a 33-16 advantage in shots.
The Alberta Cup is an annual event featuring the top second-year bantam hockey players in the province.
Central opened the tournament Thursday with a 4-3 win over Edmonton North, then lost 4-1 to Calgary South in a late contest.
Defenceman Dominic Schiemann of James River Bridge scored at 14:04 of the third period to lift Central past Edmonton North. Brent Trentham of Three Hills, Tyrees Goodrunning of Rocky Mountain House and Brenden Davidson of Clive also tallied for the winners, who got a 28-save outing from Weatherill while holding a 38-31 edge in shots.
Central led 2-1 after the first period and held a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame.
Seth Stratton of Red Deer scored in the loss to Calgary South. Justin Travis of Red Deer made 20 saves in a losing cause.
Central outshot Calgary South 24-20 but trailed 2-0 after one period and 4-1 after 40 minutes.
The semifinal games are at 8 and 10:30 a.m. and 1 and 3:30 p.m. today, and will be followed by the D to A championships Sunday at 8 and 10:45 a.m. and 1:30 and 4:15 p.m.
