Ontario, Quebec play for semifinal spot at Under-17 Challenge

Ontario and Quebec will have one more shot at advancing to the semifinals at the under-17 world hockey challenge.

Spencer Watson scored a hat trick as Ontario cruised to an 11-1 victory over Atlantic on Tuesday, while Alexis Pepin had two goals including the game winner as Quebec edged Slovakia 3-2.

Ontario (2-1) and Quebec (2-1) will play each other in the final game of the round robin Wednesday, with the winner heading to a semifinal match against the United States.

Elsewhere at the tournament it was: Sweden 7, Russia 4; and Pacific 5, Finland 4 (SO).

At Drummondville, Que., Ontario outshot Atlantic 60-13 and became the first team since Pacific in 2006 to score at least 10 goals in a game twice in one tournament after beating Slovakia 12-0 on Sunday.

The loss dropped Atlantic to 1-3.

Dante Salituro was Ontario’s top scorer with two goals and two assists, while Michael Dal Colle had two goals and a helper.

Later, Pepin and Vincent Deslauriers gave Quebec a 2-0 lead in the first period before goals by Matej Palocko and Adrian Holesinsky tied the game for Slovakia (0-3).

But Pepin’s goal at 11:14 in the third put Quebec ahead and kept the team’s semifinal hopes alive.

Sweden 7 Russia 4

At Victoriaville, Que., Oskar Lindblom had two goals and an assist as Sweden beat Russia (1-2) to finish the round robin unbeaten through four games.

Pacific 5 Finland 4 (SO)

At Victoriaville, Que., Jake Viranen scored twice and added the shootout winner for Pacific (2-1), which held off Finland (1-2) to hold the head-to-head tiebreaker for the last semifinal spot.
