Pair of Red Deer players win AJHL awards

Red Deer native Tanner Jaillet is the winner of the Alberta Junior Hockey League top goaltender award for the 2013-14 season as voted on by the league’s general managers and coaches.

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons netminder opened the season with 10 straight wins and 13 games without a regulation-time loss. He’s currently tied for first overall with a .933 save percentage, is second among AJHL goaltenders with a 2.01 goals-against average and has posted a league-leading six shutouts.

Jaillet, who has a 29-9-3 record, was selected as the player of the game nine times during the season, was honoured as the AJHL player of the month and player of the week and was also selected as the Canadian Junior Hockey League first star of the month for September.

The 20-year-old, who has committed to the University of Denver for next season, was also a finalist for the league’s MVP award, won by Trey Phillips of the Canmore Eagles, who was also selected as the most outstanding defenceman.

Meanwhile, another Red Deer product, Chris Gerrie of the Olds Grizzlys, is the AJHL rookie of the year.

The 17-year-old forward, who has committed to Michigan Tech University for the 2016-17 season, leads all AJHL rookies in goals, assists and points (18-35-53).

Gerrie was selected as the player of the game five times during his rookie campaign and is the fourth player in Grizzlys franchise history to win the AJHL freshman award.

Grizzlys captain Spencer Dorowicz was a runner-up for league MVP honours.

The other award winners include Anthony Paskarak of the Brooks Bandits as most dedicated player and Jason McKee of the Spruce Grove Saints as coach of the year.
