Queens finally win

Queens 3 SAIT 2

CALGARY — The Queens can finally breathe a sigh of relief, as they secured their first win of the Alberta Colleges Women’s Hockey League season Saturday with a 3-2 win over the SAIT Trojans.

“It was a barn burner,” said Queens coach Rob Weddell.

“The ref called 17 penalties so it was a game of special teams.

“It was tough. We started gripping our sticks pretty tight there in the third period — we wanted to win so bad that we started playing not to lose.”

Things weren’t looking great off the start as the Queens (1-8-0-0) fell behind SAIT (4-3-1-1) 2-0 early in the first. But Chantal Froehler got RDC turned in the right direction with a goal before the first break.

Rachel Hoppins then scored a power play goal in each of the final two periods to will the Queens to victory.

Kendra Lakeman made 24 saves for the win.

l EDMONTON — The shorthanded RDC Queens had a tough night against the Concordia University College Lightning Saturday, losing 84-39.

Missing three of their top scorerers — Lisa Ivanics, Karlen Majcher and Jessica Foley-Geldart — they were not able to make up the difference.

“We were definitely short off the bench,” said Queens head coach Dawn Smyth.

“Of those three one averages 20 points and another averages 10 points a game, so we were missing 30 points and had to find 30 points from some of our other players.”

They were led by Lauren Lyoke who scored 11 points and seven rebounds
