Queens move into first

Queens 3 Cougars 2

CALGARY — On Friday night the RDC Queens volleyball team proved why they hold the No. 2 ranking nationally.

Down two sets to none, the Queens rallied to beat the Mount Royal College Cougars in five sets (21-25, 27-29, 25-19, 25-17, 15-13) and took sole possession of first place an the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference South Division.

“It was a big night. To be down 2-0 in their gym, we’ve had a little bit of trouble playing well in there gym in the big facility, and to come back and win three straight and do a pretty good job in those three sets was definitely a big confidence builder for us,” said Queens coach Talbot Walton.

Katie Graves led the Queens with 16 kills and 22 digs while Alyssa Jones added 15 kills and 12 digs and Jessica Clutton had 10 kills.

The Queens (14-1) can take a strangle hold on first place if they can complete the sweep over the Cougars (13-2) by finishing the weekend sweep at RDC today at 6 p.m.

Cougars 3 Kings 0

The RDC Kings continued their struggles on Friday losing in straight sets to the MRC Cougars ( 25-22, 27-25, 26-24).

In the end this loss more self inflicted than anything as poor attacking lead to the three close losses.

“Our big bangers on the outside are not getting the job done on a consistent enough basis — in particular Mitch Irvine our right side hitter and Chris Wowchuk our team captain, a third year left side player, need to do a better job of putting the ball away,” said Kings coach Aaron Schulha. “Our hitting efficiency as a team was under 20 per cent for the three sets.”

Irvine led the Kings with 13 kills and five digs while Jeremy Stubler added eight kills and two stuff blocks.

However, the Kings (8-7) did manage to serve better than they have in recent weeks and are hoping to right the ship completely over the final five games starting today when they host the Cougars (11-4) in the return game.
