Queens pushed to the Edge

Queens 4 Edge 3 (OT)

One of the things RDC Queens hockey head coach Rob Weddell wanted to work on during their exhibition game against the Edge Hockey Academy of Calgary was players going to the net with their sticks on the ice.

His message obviously got through as Queens star forward Karla Bourke tipped in a pass from Montanna Noyes at 2:47 of overtime to give the Queens a 4-3 victory at the Arena Thursday.

“We had a couple of goals because the girls had their sticks on the ice and were prepared to take the pass,” said Weddell, who was overall pleased with the team’s performance against the high school aged team.

“They have a very good team and that was an ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) calibre game,” he added. “The girls had to take it seriously, which was exactly what we needed.”

The Queens played well the first two periods and grabbed a 3-2 lead, but did sit back some in the third, when they were outshot 8-5.

“We didn’t show a killer instinct, which is something we need to work on,” said Weddell. “But give them credit as well, they turned it up a bit in the third.”

Bourke scored a pair of goals for the Queens while Jessica Abt and Mika Strueby added single markers. Rachel Walsh, Brittany Styner and Logan Murray connected for the Edge.

Kendra Lakeman started in goal for the Queens and allowed two goals on 12 shots while Kaitlyn Chapman stopped eight of nine shots. Queens had 29 shots on Jordan Quiring in the Calgary net.

The Queens were without four regulars — defencemen Janel Lirette and Brandi Buss and forwards Nikki Doiron and Brittany Erlandson.

The RDC squad returns to action Thursday when they host Mount Royal.
