Rietze wins junior golf event in playoff

Jeremy Rietze of Lacombe rolled in a 15-foot downhill putt for birdie to force a playoff, then dropped a 10-footer for birdie on the first extra hole to win a McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour event Wednesday at Olds.

Rietze and Jacob Thomas of Edmonton each shot 71 through 18 holes before heading to the first playoff tee. Peter Slade of Calgary was another sbot back and Logan Hill of Red Deer placed fourth with a 74.

Jaxon Lynn of Sylvan Lake finished fifth with a 75 and Carter Graf of Red Deer was 10th after carding an 82.

Clare McMahon of Red Deer won the girls title with an 80. Courtney Dickson of Innisfail was second with an 83, while Nicole Schultz of Olds finished last in the six-player field with a 94.

Other Central Alberta boys results:

Chandler McLaren, Wolf Creek, 83; Spencer Bearchell, Olds, 86; Brandon Maxwell, Rocky Mountain House Pine Hills, 86; Sam Hamelin, Stettler, 88; Chase Broderson, Lacombe, 91.

l Jordan Cooke of Sylvan Lake carded a final-round 78 Wednesday and placed seventh in the bantam boys division of a 54-hole Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour event at Calgary McKenzie Meadows.

Cooke turned in earlier scores of 83-85 and finished with a 246 total. Korbin Allan of Lyalta captured the bantam title with a 222 total (71-77-74), 16 strokes better than runner-up Jordan Bean of Saskatoon.

l Chandler McLaren shot an 86 and finished out of the overall top 10 in a McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour event Thursday at Calgary Country Hills.

McLaren’s score was good for fifth place in the category for boys born in 1995, ‘96 and ‘97. Chris Horton of the host club was the overall winner with a 77.
