Sanguin runs to title
RDC’s outstanding runner, Jodi Sanguin, ran away with the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference cross-country championship in Edmonton Saturday.
Sanguin won the five-kilometre women’s run in 19 minutes, 36 seconds, nine seconds ahead of Fiona Benson of Grande Prairie.
Purity Kandle of Lethbridge was third at 20:28 and RDC’s Jesslyn Begin fourth at 20:32.
RDC captured the women’s team title with 27 points, based on the placings of the top four runners.
Natasha Dorsey placed eighth at 21:34 and Alesha Miller 14th at 22:17. Melissa Cable (22:56) came in 18th with Amanda McWhan (24:32) in 31st and Kate Blackett (25:05) in 39th.
Grant MacEwan was second in the team competition with 48 points while Camrose Augustana was third with 53 points.
“The RDC women were favoured to win the team title, which placed a little more pressure on them, but they responded well to the challenge,” said RDC coach Brian Stackhouse. “Most of the girls had personal best performances in their biggest race of the season.”
Augustana won the men’s team title with 29 points with Lethbridge at 37 and Grant MacEwan 39.
RDC was eighth with 140 points.
Jonathan Fuller was the top RDC runner in the eight km run, placing 20th in the 31:51. Chance Abbott was 37th at 34:09.
Willy Kimosop of Lethbridge took top spot in 26:37 with Andrew Pohl of Camrose at 28:20 and Peter Kayla of Lethbridge at 28:51.
The top seven finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions will represent the ACAC in the Canadian championships, Nov. 13 in Fredericton, N.B.
The RDC will send the majority of their team to the nationals with the women’s team ranked No. 2, back of defending champion Fanshawe College of London, Ont.
