Volleyball players honoured

Two members of the RDC volleyball squads were honoured at the RDC Kings and Queens scholarship breakfast at the Red Deer Lodge this morning.

Queens middle blocker Mandy Norris and Kings setter Evan Whitecotton were presented with the Bank of Montreal student athlete leadership awards.

The two $3,000 scholarships are presented to student athletes who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, on the playing field and have been involved in community leadership.

Norris, a third-year member of the Alberta champion Queens, is president of the RDC student council, a member of the Queens leadership group, a volunteer coach with the Queens Volleyball Club’s U13 team, has a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) and runs her own painting business.

Whitecotton was captain of the RDC Kings, volunteered over 200 hours with the RDC athletic department, is a volunteer coach with the Central Alberta Kings U17 volleyball team and has a GPA of over 3.0.

The $6,000 in scholarship money will be matched by the RDC Foundation to create additional scholarships for student athletes.

Indoor soccer finals set

The Bosnian Canadians will meet Vonway Homes in the Central Alberta Men’s Indoor Soccer League Tier I final Thursday at 7 p.m. at Collicutt Centre East.

The championship game is one of six on the evening.

The Tier II final between Condor and the Kindopp’s Old Boyz goes at 7:15 p.m. at Collicutt West

The tier I consolation final between Ferus Green Hornets and the Red Deer Rovers goes at 8 p.m. while the Tier II consolation game between the RDC Rec Royals and Blarney Stone North is set for 8:15 p.m.

Two other Tier I placement games are also on the schedule.

The Majoma Vital Royals meets Parkland United at 9 p.m. and Canadian University College takes on Red Deer United U18 at 9:15 p.m.

Fencers capture five medals

CALGARY — Red Deer Fencing Club members captured five medals at the Priori Epee Cup competition during the weekend.

Thomas Lyver won the U13 mixed competition with teammate Csenge Kozma second.

Alanna Bowie was second and Karren Lyver third in the senior women’s division while David Coates took third in the senior men’s recreation category.

Coates was also 10th in the senior men’s open while Norm Wiebe was seventh in senior men’s recreation.

Red Deer United captures silver

Red Deer United captured silver at the girls’ U18 Tier II provincial championships during the weekend, dropping a 4-1 decision to Sherwood Park in the final.

Claire Wallace scored the lone Red Deer goal while Lauren Good turned in a solid performance in goal.

The United squad posted a 3-0 record in pool play, beating the top-ranked Calgary Blizzard Avalanche 3-0, the St. Albert Impact 2-1 and Medicine Hat 4-1.

Tayler Letwin, Moria Duley and Allison Taylor scored against the Avalanche while Paula Dadensky and Duley connected against the Impact.

Wallace scored three times and Duley once against Medicine Hat.

Catalinas take sixth at short course championships

CALGARY — The Red Deer Catalina Swim Club captured sixth place in the women’s division at the Alberta short course age group championships during the weekend.

Halle Loyek, 12, led the 17-member Catalina team by winning the 50-metre freestyle in 28.84 seconds and finishing second in the 100m freestyle in 1:02.96 and the 100m Individual Medley in 1:14.46.

Three other Catalina swimmers — Breana Menzel, 10, Jessie Bailey, 12, and Morgann Bruin, 14 — reached the podium.

Menzel was second in the 50m breaststroke and third in the 100 and 200m breaststroke while Bailey placed second in the 200m breaststroke and third in the 100m breaststroke. Bruin was third in the 100m butterfly in a very fast time of 1:06.85.

Other swimmers to advance to the final were:

Madalyn Smith, 10, 50 breaststroke; Brianna Bailey, 14, 200 breaststroke; Rebecca Smith, 9, 100 I.M.; Amy Andrew, 14, 1,500 freestyle; Emma MacDermaid, 10, 400 freestyle; Ame Nieuwoudt, 13, 100 I.M.; Sarah Broen, 13, 1,500 freestyle; Rebecca Miller, 14, 400 I.M.; Dallas Little, 13, 200 butterfly; Lainie Wareham, 11, 400 I.M.; Kyra Brown, 11, 200 butterfly; Danielle Reid, 1,500 freestyle.

Eleven-year-old Kaitlyn Houndsome also competed in the meet and was a member of the 11-12 year-old relay team.

“It was a great finish to the short course season with a very positive team result,” said Catalina head coach Sam Montgomery.

“As a mid-sized team we were always a factor in the races and scored very high on a per capita basis.

“Head age group coach Mandi Smith did a fantastic job in preparing for the championship.”
