White off to slow start

NORTH VANCOUVER — Red Deer’s Adrienne White got off to a tough start on the CN Canadian Women’s Golf Tour. White put together rounds of 80-78 on the Seymour Golf and Country Club to tie for 32nd in the field of 88 with a 158 total, 14 strokes back of champion Taya Battistella of Bend, Ore. White is looking to use the tour to qualify for the LPGA’s Canadian Open, set for Aug. 31-Sept. 6 at Priddis Greens in Calgary. The next stop on the CN Tour is June 7-9 in Guelph, Ont., with the final stop, July 13-15 in Mirabel, Que. The winner of each of the three CN Tour events advances to the Open along with the top finishers on the Order of Merit.

Rolling to nationals

Five Red Deer inline hockey teams captured gold medals at the North American Roller Hockey Championship (NARHC) qualifier in Medicine Hat during the weekend.The winners are eligible to attend the NARHC in Mississauga in July.

The Red Deer Snipers captured the U10 division beating Medicine Hat 11-3, 9-1 and 11-3 in the best-of-five playoff.

The Red Deer Senior Snipers won the U12 division with a 4-0 record, including a 13-5 win over Sherwood Park in the final. while the Junior Snipers were 2-2 in the U12 division and lost in the semifinals.

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Phantoms won the U14 division, beating Sherwood Park 6-4 in the final.

In the U16 division the Red Deer Canyon Cougars placed second in their pool before beating Medicine Hat 8-4 in the semifinals and Lacombe 11-1 in the final.

The Red Deer Quinn Pump Senior Snipers won the U18 division with a 4-3 shootout win over Sherwood Park.

The Snipers, who won their pool, came from behind to tie the final at 3-3. After a scoreless sudden-death overtime, Kane Gellert scored in the third round of the sudden-death shootout to record the victory.

Triple qualifier

David Errington, 17, of the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club qualified for the C finals in the 50-, 100- and 200m breaststroke events of the Mel Zajac International meet at Vancouver during the weekend.

Meanwhile, Ame Nieuwoudt qualified for the Age Group Nationals in the 13-year old girls’ 50m butterfly. She will join Catalina teammates Nicole Cossey, Errington, Brianna Bailey and Morgann Bruin at the Nationals in Montreal in July.

“This was a very exciting experience for our young swimmers as they were competing against several seasoned competitors, including members of the 2009 Canadian Olympic team and the USA junior team,” said Catalina coach Mandi Smith. “I think that we learned a lot about international racing and made some new personal goals to strive for.”

The Catalina Club will host the 57th annual Freeze or Fry meet June 5-7 at the Red Deer Recreation Centre outdoor pool.

Double silver for Exelta

CALGARY — The Red Deer Exelta Gymnastics Club captured a pair of all-around medals at the men’s artistic competition during the weekend.

Findley McCormick was first and Connor Trepanier second in the level 4 division.

McCormick won the floor exercise and vault, took second on the pommel horse, third on the rings and parallel bars and sixth on the high bar.

Trepanier won the horse and parallel bars while taking second on the rings, third on the floor, fourth on the vault and eighth on the high bar.

Meanwhile Mitchell Kalan was ninth all-around in the level 4 division. He was third on the horse, eighth on the high bar, ninth on the floor, rings and vault and 10th on the parallel bars.

Butterfield even at Alberta Open

DEWINTON — Troy Butterfield of Red Deer turned in an even-par 72 Tuesday and was nine strokes behind leader and two-time defending champion Wes Heffernan of Calgary heading into today’s second round of the Alberta Open at Carmoney Golf Club.

Butterfield, who plays out of Wolf Creek, was the top Central Albertan through 18 holes of the three-round tournament, one stroke better than Forest Heights member Ted Bach of Sundre.

• Joey Sereda and Mitch Evanecz were a respective five and seven strokes off the pace following the first round of the Canadian University/College championship at Hamilton.

Sereda, of the University of the Alberta, and U of Victoria team member Evanecz turned in scores of 77 and 79 in the men’s division Tuesday and were tied for 26th and 41st place. The first-round leader was Mathieu Gingras of Laval, who carded a 72.

Former Red Deer resident Jocelyn Alford of Calgary, a University of British Columbia student, was tied for ninth in the women’s category after a round of 79. Alyssa Human, also from UBC, was the first-round leader with a 74.
