Sports briefs - November 16


EDMONTON — The Red Deer Fencing Club garnered five medals in the Wetterbeg Open tournament at the University of Alberta during the weekend.

Norm Wiebe led the local charge by earning a silver medal in the veteran men’s epee event and a bronze in the men’s epee.

Karis Langvand landed a silver medal in the under-20 men’s epee following the cancellation of the women’s epee events. She defeated teammate Dakota Wohl in a semifinal and Wohl later earned a bronze medal.

Nathaniel Johnson accounted for the other Red Deer medal, picking up a bronze in the under-120 men’s sabre event.


Smith seven times golden

Rebecca Smith of the Catalina Swim Club was victorious in all seven of her events of the Poppy Meet at the Edmonton Kinsmen Center during the weekend.

Smith’s conquests highlighted a weekend in which the 57 Catalina swimmers entered in the competition hauled in a total of 116 medals, including 49 gold.

Meanwhile, Becky Miller, 15, qualified for age group nationals in the 100-metre breaststroke, Alana Skocdopole qualified for western nationals in the 400 IM, Paul DeMaere qualified for ‘A’ provincials in the 400 freestyle, Korben Johnson achieved an MQT standard in the 400 free, and new club records were set by David Errington in the 100 breaststroke and Nicole Cossey in the 100 free.

The Catalina Swim Club five km challenge is set for Friday at the Michener pool from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The meet involves 40 Catalina swimmers attempting to achieve Canadian ranking times.
