Sting snag silver from ringette nationals

REGINA — The Central Alberta Sting captured silver at the Canadian U16 ringette championships Saturday, dropping a 6-5 decision to Team Ontario in the final.

Gillian Dreger of Lacombe scored three times and Shae-Lyn Baxter of Lacombe twice for the Sting. Baylee Schulhauser of Red Deer made 33 saves on 36 shots over the opening 20 minutes while Rebecca Forrester of Lacombe made 24 saves on 27 shots over the final 20 minutes.

The Sting reached the final with a 10-5 win over Team Alberta with Dreger scoring five times and adding four assists. Rylee Frank of Lacombe, Baxter, Sydney Cherniak of Lacombe, Brenna Parent of Lacombe and Kristin Demale of Red Deer added single goals. Schulhauser made 19 saves while facing 22 shots and Forrester finished with 11 saves on 13 shots.

The Sting downed Quebec’s Outaouais 8-4 in the quarter-final as Dreger and Baxter scored twice each and Frank, Cherniak, Parent and Hilary Hardy of Red Deer once apiece. Forrester made 33 saves.

The Sting had three players on the first all-star team in Dreger at centre and Melissa Misutka and Bryn Lunn of Lacombe on defence. Demale was a second-team all-star forward with Forrester in goal.

Meanwhile the Edmonton WAM finished third in the National Ringette League playoffs, losing 3-2 to the Ottawa Ice in the semifinal. The Ice went on to down Cambridge, Ont., 7-4 in the final.

Jamie Bell of Lacombe had both Edmonton goals against the Ice while Breanna Beck of Red Deer made 38 saves.

Edmonton stopped the Montreal Mission 6-3 in the quarter-finals with Dailyn Bell of Lacombe scoring three times and Jamie Bell twice. Beck made 50 saves.

Dailyn Bell was a first-team all-star at forward and was named league MVP. Jamie Bell was a second-team all-star at centre.
