Last weekend the Rookie Canyon Ski Resort Patrol Team from Red Deer was crowned champions.
At Sunshine Village Ski Resort near Banff, the Red Deer Rookies won multiple events en route to winning the 53rd annual Canadian Ski Patrol First Aid and On Snow Training competition.
They claimed the top spot in various key events including the on-snow category, first aid, and toboggan handling.
Coming in first in those three events helped the Rookies finish with the best combined score to secure their spot as the standout team.
Red Deer also claimed the title of overall first aid and on snow champions marking the first time a rookie team earned the best overall score.
They beat out eight other teams, some of which had over 20 years of experience as ski patrollers.
“Their outstanding victory not only celebrates their individual talent but also reflects the collective effort and camaraderie within the Canyon Ski Resort patrol team,” as stated in a media release.
“Through rigorous training, perseverance, and a shared passion for safety, the Red Deer Rookies distinguished themselves as exemplary ambassadors of the Canadian Ski Patrol and of the Red Deer Region.”
With the victory, they qualified for the National Canadian Ski Patrol Competition but there’s uncertainty whether the event will take place.
“The Red Deer Rookies’ remarkable achievement stands as a testament to their dedication, skill, and spirit. Their victory not only inspires fellow ski patrollers but also provides a sense of pride for those in the Red Deer Region.”
