Argonauts start filling QB void by landing Dalton Bell from Roughriders
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — The Toronto Argonauts started filling their void at quarterback by acquiring Dalton Bell from the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Tuesday for a fifth-round draft pick in the 2010 CFL draft.
The Argos, in the midst of a massive off-season overhaul, had been without a QB on the roster after releasing starter Kerry Joseph, backup Cody Pickett and little-used reserve Stephen Reaves last month.
Bell, 27, spent the past two seasons on Saskatchewan’s practice roster and will be given a chance to compete for a job with the Argos.
They sent a draft pick that was originally picked up from the Roughriders in the deal for offensive tackle Cliff Washburn to get him.
“We feel very fortunate to obtain the playing rights of Dalton Bell,” Argos GM Adam Rita said in a statement. “He’s a young quarterback with a bright future. He is a good candidate to come to Toronto and compete for a quarterback spot.”
Bell has had stops with the Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks after starring for West Texas A&M.
In college, he threw for career totals of 7,841 yards, 63 touchdowns and completed 699-of-1,044 pass attempts.
