Rebels take Dumba 4th overall
The Red Deer Rebels selected Calgary defenceman Matt Dumba with their first-round selection, fourth overall, in the Western Hockey League bantam draft Thursday in Edmonton.
Dumba, who was ranked No. 1 for the draft by International Scouting Services, is one of eight Alberta products picked by the Rebels.
Red Deer selected 11 players in the draft, opting for Airdrie right winger Mason Burr with their second pick and taking left winger Joel Hamilton of Cochrane in the fourth round (the Rebels did not have a third-round selection due to a 2007 trade with Brandon).
Edmonton centre Marc McCoy was the Rebels’ fifth-round pick, and with two choices in each of the next two rounds, Red Deer nabbed defenceman Lucas Grayson of Port Hardy, B.C., and right wing Chase McMurphy of Chestermere in the sixth round, and rearguard Davin Stener of Fort Saskatchewan and goaltender Bolton Pouliot of Calgary in the seventh.
Brooks Maxwell, a centre from Raymond, was taken by Red Deer in the eighth round, and left winger Nikolas Olsson of Escondido, Calif., and centre Tyler Bateman of Kelowna were chosen in the ninth and 10th rounds.
