The RDC Kings more than held their own against the MacEwan University Griffins

Griffins 5 Kings 1

EDMONTON — The RDC Kings more than held their own against the MacEwan University Griffins in Alberta Colleges Men’s Hockey League play Saturday, but it didn’t help on the scoreboard.

The Kings outshot the Griffins 45-36, but fell 5-1.

The Kings special teams hurt them again as they gave up two power play goals — one while two men short — in five shorthanded situations and failed to score on their five power plays.

Ryan Benn did all the damage the Griffins needed as he scored at 1:19 of the first period and 1:42 of the second. Redford Swan also connected at 18:32 of the first period and Tyler Morrison on a two-man advantage at 19:47.

Bryan Arneson had a power play goal at 4:31 of the middle stanza to give the Griffins a 5-0 lead. Tyler Berkholtz scored for the Kings at 7:35.

Troy Trombley finished with 31 saves for RDC, who had 45 shots on Christopher Wray, including 17 in the second period and 18 in the third.

The Kings have a 8-13-2-1 record and need only to beat Portage College once this weekend to finish fifth. The teams meet Friday at 7 p.m. in Penhold and Saturday in Lac La Biche.
