Midget Elite Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs win gold at provincials

The Midget Elite Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs were crowned provincial champions on the weekend after defeating the Peace Country Storm 4-1 in the final in Sherwood Park.

The Midget Elite Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs were crowned provincial champions on the weekend after defeating the Peace Country Storm 4-1 in the final in Sherwood Park.

In the second weekend of Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships, on Sunday the Sutter Fund Chiefs jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Storm and didn’t look back en route to the title victory.

Aryn Chambers scored the game winner for Red Deer and Juliana Gulayets added two goals in the win. Jayda Thompson also made 18 saves in net for the Sutter Fund Chiefs.

Red Deer went undefeated in the tournament with wins over Edmonton, Peace Country and Sherwood Park, along with a tie against Calgary.

They also scored 12 goals in round robin and only allowed three. Sutter Fund Chiefs forward Danica Polson led the tournament in scoring with two goals, five assists for seven points.

The Red Deer Midget Female A team also made a trip to the gold medal game at provincials in Edmonton but came up short with a 6-1 loss.

Hope Holbein scored the only goal for Red Deer in the loss as they captured the silver medal.

Before the final, Red Deer was undefeated in round robin play with three straight victories over Edmonton, Strathcona and Calgary before beating Edmonton again in the semis to advance to the final.

The Stettler Storm were Pee Wee Female B provincial champions, defeating Olds 4-3 in the gold medal game.

Both teams were undefeated heading into the final and battled back and forth trading goals before Chloe Shingoose scored the game winning goal early in the third for Stettler.

Brooklynn Ruby, Jordan Swanby and Eliana Seeley had goals for Olds in the final.

The Eckville Eagles were silver medal winners in Elk Point after losing 4-0 in the Midget D provincial final against Valleyview.

The Eagles were undefeated with two wins and a tie in round robin play. They also outscored their opponents 24-12 over the course of the tournament.
