Midget AA Elks win opener in OT

LETHBRIDGE — Ryan Petrie’s hat-trick goal couldn’t have come at a better time.
The Red Deer Midget AA Elk forward scored his third goal of game 8:55 into overtime to give the Elks a 7-6 win and a 1-0 lead in the South Central League final.
Chris Robertson added a pair of goals while Kolton Gillett and Jay Coleman both scored once. Jarren Nickle made 32 saves for the win.
Game 2 goes today in Lethbridge. Game 3 goes Saturday in Red Deer at the Arena at 6:30 p.m.
Sutter Fund Chiefs collect awards
The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs were double award winners in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League this season.
Chiefs first-year head coach Doug Young was named the coach of the year while Camille Trautman took home the top goaltender award.
Jenna Klynstra of the Edmonton Thunder was named the league’s most valuable player while Brittany Styner of the Calgary Flyers was the top forward and Tara Tomimoto of the Calgary Bruins the top defenceman.
Rhianna Kurio of the Bruins received the most sportsmanlike player award while Brittany Esposito of the Thunder was the leading scorer.
